One nuance I've heard of the term "image of God" is that kings in ancient times would claim this status for themselves to give themselves unique authority. "I am the image of God", meaning "I represent God; I have God's divinity within me, so I am above you all." For the Bible to say instead that all men and women have the "image of God" is a direct challenge to that idea. It forces you to think too...if there is something sacred and divine in all human life, then what does that mean for my enemies? I don't think it strictly leads to pacifism, but I see honor in the priest and Ragnar and Canute praying for the Vikings, as despicable as their actions are. They have become like beasts, and perhaps they deserve a beast's end, but wouldn't it be better if the spark of humanity inside them could be brought back to life?

2024-05-22 11:53:08 +0000 UTCF for Ragnar. He was a better father for the prince than the actual king. Even if he was majorly overprotective it was probably warranted considering the environment
