Attack on Titan 4x16

Comments

more/less experienced shifters seem to have more/less control over how their/when their healign abilities happen, when they activate, when they are prioritized in season 2 when they cut off eren and ymirs limbs to stop them fro mtransforming its because they instinctiveyl try to heal first and use up all their energy for that and itm akes sense, they both ahve very ltitle experience controlling a titan shifter body but annie in titan form was able to only heal one eye so it owuld heal faster and eren was able to hide in marley with a lost leg and probably more or less severe head injury and only healed it when he wanted and raine and bertholt also somewhath id hteir healing abilities back when they were undercover early in season 2 rainer breaks hist arm and keeps it injured to stay udnercover and only heals it when he revelas he's the armored titan to eren so celarly you can have some control though I guess once you're close to death you kinda start trying to heal if you want to or not

HAL

28:00 I doubt it, she's kinda signed her life away to within a few years though I guess if possible she'd prefer to live too

HAL

I mean she does seem kinda obsessed with killing...

HAL

having something injected into your spine is also not the kind of injury any naturally evolved mechanism would ever be prepared for like in the wild if something that shouldn't be gets into the inside of your spine you usually have much much much bigger injuries first

HAL

in season 1 he didn't understand how his psychological state and transformation work exactly so biting was more controllable and sometiems it works and sometimes it doesn't now he has the experience to understand how to precisely control his transformation so he can just cut himself preemptively

HAL

zeke literally being reverse birthed

HAL

If I'm not mistaken what Eren calls Gabi is 殺すガキ (korosu-gaki) which is literally a combination of the Japanese words for "kill" and "brat". So he literally calls her "Murder-Brat" like that's her name. Which I think is absolutely hilarious and maybe just a tiny bit hypocritical of Eren considering he stabbed two people to death at the age of nine. lol He just doesn't care what Gabi's name is and possibly might not even know what it is to begin with. lol It's said in such a matter of fact way, like he doesn't see her as a soldier or an enemy, just some stupid kid that got a lucky shot off. It's so dismissive and yet grudging at the same time, I love it.

It's true that titan shifters need an open wound to transform, but that's not the only requirement. I won't blame you to have forgotten this since it was all the way back in season 1, but you also need a clear "goal." This was revealed at the flashback during the Annie chase where Eren partially transformed in order to grab a spoon. So Eren can preemptivally cut himself while waiting to "give the command" as it were to transform. Essentially hold off on getting a clear goal in your head. Also the legs thing. This was mentioned in season 2, but the reason you sometimes can't transform is because your body is too exhausted. This most often happens after you've already transformed once and don't have the stamina to do it again. This has been exploited by both sides on many occasions by for example cutting off limbs in order to never let the body recover enough to transform again. I.e., the cut off legs are not the reason they can't transform, they're simply a way of keeping it that way. In Eren's case, he hadn't transformed since the raid on Liberio and has been well rested. Cutting off his legs would be akin to any other open wound he could've created himself.

She points to Eren as if to say, "You are the enemy".

The conditions for transformation are interesting/confusing for sure. (no spoilers ahead, don't take any of this as fact or fiction, it's my thought process at the time of seeing this episode for the first time) I remember my theory at this point in the series being that whatever makes people into titans is actually intended as a self defense mechanism, and that the creation of pure titans is that self defense mechanism sort of "breaks" in Eldians who are not attached to some locus of power that allowed it to function properly (AKA one of the nine) and so instead of healing them or granting them a giant body they could control it would do a half-assed job of the latter. This made sense to me because receiving harm is the specific trigger and experienced shifters seemed to be able to choose A) don't do anything B) heal me, or C) give me the power to defend myself. I surmised if the purpose of titan powers was an offensive weapon the trigger would not have been getting wounded (assuming the way it functioned was designed intentionally).

Probably the best explanation of the vow renouncing war you can get.

Marc Schuster

I feel as if you’ve missed or forgotten one of the major plot points that’s driving everything in Season 4. In Season 3, one of the main revelations we learned was that the Fritz king, when he fled to the island, made a vow renouncing war that prevents all of his future offspring that inherit the founding Titan from fighting back. Hange explains this pretty directly when she’s injured in the cart and they’re traveling back to the city chasing Rod Titan. In addition, when Historia kills Rod, we see her gain access to his memories, where we learn that many of the inheritors of the Founding Titan were all for fighting back pre-inheritance, but as soon as they got the Titan, they were influenced by the Vow and did a complete 180. Then once again, Wily Tybur explains this during the play. He reveals the truth that the King made a vow renouncing war that has prevented the island from ever fighting back. But then says the main reason they are in trouble is because Eren now possesses the founding Titan. Since he’s not from the royal family, this vow doesn’t influence him. The catch is that first we learned Eren can’t access the Founding Titans powers due to not being of Royal blood. But then he did once at the end of S2. At the end of S3 we learn it’s because he touched Dina, a titan with Royal blood. So basically the central plot of S4 has been Eren and Zeke trying to touch so that Eren can access the Founding Titan’s powers, while also not being held back by the vow renouncing war. The shows hammered this home quite a few times over S3 and S4, so I’ve been kind of surprised that every time it’s brought up it seems like new information to you. I do get it though, there’s lots to follow and keep track of! Love your reactions and the in-depth discussions as always!

Pieck was awesome this episode. Definitely a great example of Pyxis’s advice on how to tell a good lie, “sometimes, you’ve gotta mix the truth into it.” Everything she said was true except her motive for being there.

Russell Gambardella

Best girl Pieck back to business! I think with phrase "I trust the people i fought alongside" she meant, because the Marley of today is not the same as the Marley before the attack on Liberio, and the main reason for that is because of Magath. Of course, he was prejudiced against Eldians, but also he was full of doubts and concerns about Marley itself and recognized that the nation’s obsessive pursuit of wars and conquers is leading it down a path to destruction. It looks like Magath wanted Marley to change its ways. That's why he tried to make Marleyans join the military, hoping they'd see how bad war is and stop supporting constant wars. Magath also worked with Willy to kill top military leaders during the attack on Liberio, so he could change how the military works. Now, he's in charge of the military. And we saw that Magath, despite his prejudiced against Eldians, a little bit cared about his eldian subordinates, he still valued the lives of the Marleyans above the Eldians, but wasn't completed blinded by hatred or biases and tried to avoid unnecessary losses between them. And during the raid on Liberio, he was genuinely worried about Falco and Gabi. That's not to say that Magath has miraculously become a good man, or isn't a general who sent waves of Eldian soldiers to die while storming trenches. However, Peak has reasons to trust him as her commander, and to another Eldians and Marleyans from army who also fought alongside with her, like Panzer Unit guys, who also was Marleyans, but had deep bond with her. Thank you for reaction!

Aidos Smagulov

That was the case in season 2 iirc

M U

Good reaction. I was just wondering, why do you think the shifters can't transform if their legst are gone.

Florian Krause

A person is capable of transforming even upon grievous injury. However, if they’ve already been in titan form ,and then get seriously injured , their power is diverted to healing the body. They won’t be able to transform again until their injury is fully healed and they’ve had time to recover. Eren could transform multiple times in Marley because his human body was not grievously injured & he was at full stamina. So it depends on will power , stamina, & health of the Titan wielder .

Paris Hardy

The vow renouncing war is the same reason uri, uri's father and freida were not able to do anything. It was the vow king frits bestowed upon his children and passed down through generations.
