Attack on Titan 4x13

Holy fuck, this was utter terrible brilliance in writing. One of the best episodes of the show, I think...

Every AoT fan can agree on the fact that the characters are well written, but there are jsut many that pick a side according to their values and morals. I dont like floch because I can´t sympathize with his decisions/actions, as I would never do them. gabi on the other hand, is totally relatable from her point of view. Thats why I love her

Fucsiada

They're kind of a mix of Nazi Germany and current USA.

I found Gabi so incredibly frustrating the first part of this season because she was so beyond obstinate even when confronted and called out on her illogical ideology. Plus I can't get over her "Did you see it happen?" line - Gabi was basically a Holocaust denier there, which is especially egregious considering she knows what Reiner did. It's like "Gabi. YOUR COUSIN WAS LITERALLY THE ONE WHO ATTACKED AND SLAUGHTERED THEM. And you KNOW that!"

Hippopi

Well that flashback was basically just fake, no? It's the missdirection that Zeke gave them.

I would say the love for gabi is 50/50 in the fandom. Some people think gabi is annoying and should rot and die lol. The other half of people love her and sympathize with her character (me). However, if we were to ask the fandom if they think gabi is well written character, I would say 95% of the fandom would say yes she is. This assessment actually works well with floch too, a lot of people hate floch and a lot of people love floch, but 95% think he's well-written at the end of the day

I love your love for Gabi, as it's one I share. I think she is one of the most realistic portrayals of a child soldier in any story I've seen. All the major developmental factors in her life, nurture, nature, and environment, have rewarded the worst of her. She may share the same propagandized and policed environment as the other Warriors, but she also clearly has a stubborn, determined nature, and she's nurtured by parents who listen to her war stories with pride and glee. I think this is the first time she really starts to see things a little more clearly. Fantastic reaction as always

Zak Moran

I believe his name should be "Zackary". Sometimes translators make overcorrections, since they know that the sound "L" doesn't exist in Japanese, and is usually replaced by "R", they just add the L everywhere.

Ideophagous

The higher-ups are a bunch of jerks anyway, they deserve to die. Not Zackly tho

Ice-Wallow-come

30:10 one hint taken by some people to read marley as less analogous to germany and rather italy thouhg I don't think a simple one to one reading makes sense either way

HAL

27:30 I think many people see gabi as well written but as a an actual person she would be a bit annoying and a lot of people REALLY liked sasha so hating gabi was quite common not so much on a writing analysis but more on a character affection level going along with the story and rooting for oyur favorite characters to survive

HAL

24:50 titans are not only people most of the titans are the exact people gabi hates

HAL

18:15 that moment when a morally grey as fuck show still makes you realize that some of its cahracters are more heroic than yourself, relatable

HAL

also the implications between lines "if you can't do it I will" "hand me the knife" doesn't do it braus used to live as a hunter he can most definitely kill he chooses not to

HAL

falco taking the hit perfectly implies how revenge by association just keeps making things worse

HAL

sashas parents are the closest anyone gets to "being right" in this morally grey masterpiece though mikasas hand grab knife stop to save gabi was pretty badass

HAL

the guys in the flashback wearing gasmasks means they're either eldian conscripts or marleyans are actually scared they might end up turning into titans too, kinda interesting and one of the spoilery side discussions we hid from you discord because spoilers though not the only :P

HAL

"I guess that makes us even Eldian.", "Did you kill a soldier?", "Someone I loved, an Eldian, a spawn of the devil!", "We have to at least keep the younguns out of the forest", "What's in the wine?", "Kill, kill, kill, that's all you think about, just like someone I know", "Use your inside voices please", "I wanted to talk with you" The writing in this episode is undisputedly top tier. This is one of the main episodes I'm always looking forward to someone experiencing for the first time.

Anna Kyruin

Was anxiously awaiting your reaction to this episode and I'm glad it didn't disappoint!

Jean-Claude Beaudoin

An Episode that many new aot watchers just fly by bc they wait for cool stuff happening from eren...The soundtrack for this scenery, the voice acting, the way in wich the mimics of characters are painted, the whole setup of the show not being about titans and gore but about racism and children that have to figure out a way out of hatred they're elders created... all of this is peakficition. The kaya, gabi, falco plotline and the children of the forest setup is absolutely peak, no other words.

tris273

Mr Braus is such a goat. If you go back all the way to the sasha episode (Season 2 ep 2) a lot of the stuff Mr Braus says there to Sasha is geniusly symbolically recontextualized, when looking at it through the lens of "the children of the forest" theme.

Here is Gabis World shattered for the 2nd time. She realizes something is wrong, but due to her programming, can't comprehend what is going on.

Florian Krause

The beauty of this scene is how Hajime Isayama made sure we didn't forget that Kaya was also in the room. He didn't casually disregard how she would feel, and react, upon finding out that Gabi, the girl she was trying to befriend and help, killed her "Big Sis". That is truly the, "chief's kiss" of dramatic emotional writing that reinforces a core narrative relating to how the cycle of violence spreads like a contagion. And I agree Gabi is one the best written characters in this series because she pushes the discussion around the aforementioned theme forward. And it all is done through her interactions with other people around her. Why? Because her views are not undermined or subverted by Isayama's own personal bias as a writer. In fact, another great character is Floch. A character that could of easily been a throw away character after season 3. Yet he too is being allowed to retain his world view by Isayama without it being undermined and so he is now playing a role in season 4. That world view being stated in season 3, episode 18 and it is, "Only a devil can save us". A line he said when he was making the case to save Erwin over Armin. In the end, this is why Hajime Isayama has created such a very compelling set of characters and story. He truly understands the craft of believable story telling which requires that he not subvert his own characters with his own personal biases. Thus, his character are who they are in the end. The good, the bad and the ugly alongside with the warts/beauty marks of their world views. This is why he has the ability to punch you in the gut emotionally when those views clash with each other and thus push the story forward.

Drift3r

Don't be surprised 😬 there're a lot of people who genuinely hate Gabi and hate Armin because he was chosen instead of Erwin etc

puremetalcore

I did wonder though, does this episode change your view on the Sasha episode in season 2? 🤔

Johnuh

This episode culminates so many characters and themes in such a masterfully written way. It’s crazy to think Sasha’s death was improvised from Isayama’s original plan and how perfectly he adapted his writing.

Russell Gambardella

This is the episode I couldn't wait for you to get to! Knew you'd love it! It just gets your heart pumping as every little thing begins falling into place. Top tier storytelling!!

Johnuh

Yes, character wise this is definitely one of the best things 8if not the best) ever set up and executed to me. =)

M U

This may seem absurd given how many great episodes there are but this is my favorite. The character writing all colliding together in this dark but necessary moment, outing the children of the forest theme in the show, the voice acting. Not a dollop of action but I was at the edge of my seat the whole time when I first watched this
