I'm late as fuck to comment this but I realized I'd forgotten to do so initially. Thought it was interesting either way. When Yukimura was writing this part of the story, he realized that he hadn't made it obvious enough how "bad" violence is and how bad Askeladd's men were for engaging in it so openly. He figured he had to insert something to show the horrors of Askeladd's actions, and came up with this village scenario. When he showed the storyboard to his editor, he proudly said "I might be a genius!" He editor was confused but after reading through it said "This might be the first time I've agreed with you." Yukimura was slightly miffed at the "first time" part though lol

I have a hard time pinning down the priest with some of his strange idiosyncrasies, but I appreciate the serious dialogs he has here. His example of the men having each other's backs in a fight was a great contextual illustration of how they have Philia (brotherly) love but not the Agape (unconditional) love that the priest is talking about (because they're willing to sacrifice for each other, but not a stranger). And then they mention Thors and the priest's reaction says everything. Like "Hey, that's it! That's what I'm talking about!" I love how you describe the myth of Thors. That's perfect, and that really is how it's depicted. It's so effective for its influence on all of these characters every time we have these callbacks. Lastly, during the discussion of God and the devil and heaven and hell, there is a well-famed proverb from the Old Testament that comes to mind. It says: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." (I think the meaning of this is a bit different than the type of fear shown by Anne, but there's something tangential there.) Lots to chew on in this episode, and I appreciated listening to your thoughts and insights.

The modern english Lord's Prayer is almost exactly what you said in German. I'm not sure if the prayer they are using is a translation of a particular Old English variant, or if it is a translation issue between Japanese and English. This is easily one of my favorite episodes. It brings you back to reality from some of the epic tales they've been doing recently. These aren't epic heroes. These are vikings, and this is war, and this is what they are doing, and this REALLY HAPPENED. It's horrible and real. It brings back what Thors said. "Who is your enemy?"... "There is no one you need to hurt." Thorfinn and the gang have been doing this for ten years now. Are you killing your enemies Thorfinn? Are you? Who even is your enemy? Is it the guy you've been hanging around with and who's been teaching you and raising you for a decade? So you're not killing him but you're killing these people for a meal. Who are your enemies Thorfinn? Lastly Anne is an AMAZING character holy shit. The guilt she feels, the personality and societal implications. The fact that she feels happy knowing people far far worse than her arent even scared of it. She was only here for a single episode but she already feels like a real person rather than just a character. There's so many overlapping feelings and thoughts she has.
