Its kind of like a levi - kennny situation... "I was never meant to be someone's father". It's clear that Askeladd does care about Thorfin but only knows how to show it in twisted ways, except for the knowledge bombs of course. It is exciting to see from here how their relationship will develop.

Thorfinn can say whatever he wants "I'm not your friend" but his actions speak louder than his words. It's not even just that he's tolerating Askeladd; he is sitting on a hill listening to him, learning from him, understanding him. And Askeladd definitely treats him more like a son than anything. Askeladd for sure isn't educating any of his other men. It's at the point now where you have to think "Thorfinn, if you succeed in killing him do you realize how much that's going to hurt you?". It'd be like killing his own family.

While I was obviously already locked in by now, this episode is what showed me that this show would be something special. Even if many more, greater scenes are yet to come, if I'm ever to get a poster on my wall for Vinland Saga it'd be of Thorfinn and Askeladd staring into the sunrise. It just encapsulates the themes of this show so incredibly well. The idea of everything being temporary, however great it may be, so treasure whatever time you get given. Don't waste it with violence, going to war, or upsetting others. Love each other, and be right there where you're needed the most.
It's a shame this scene isn't more talked about, I rarely see any online discourse for it.
