3 Body Problem 1x04

Comments

to be fair the ability/inability to understand metaphors and the different kinds of societies that might exist out there is a rather complex and nuanced question like its possibel they understand very specific kinds of metaphors but not the way we use them after all they were perfectly capable of using a reskinned game to teach us about their history with a human look and from their discussion of red riding hood it seems they are quite capable of udnerstanding that different people may know differnet htings and you might want to keep them in the dark about certian things, and givne how well they were capable of predicting and manipulating some events on earth they seem to theoretically udnerstand how humans interact they just don't seem to intuitively understand outright lies possibly because their most common form of communciation makes those impossible but thats just speculating I don't actually know, I haven't read the books

I was able to convince one of my friends to read the books so that I had somebody to talk to about them - one of his big criticisms when he got to this point was that he did not think it possible for an advanced civilization to develop without some version of metaphor/fiction. I'm not sure whether I agree or not, but I do think it is an interesting question. An example that came to mind while watching just now are the "particle in a box" problems that we studied in physical chemistry - it's a hypothetical situation that would never exist in nature, but studying the problem advances our understanding of particle behavior. Do these aliens progress without ever considering these types of hypotheticals? Maybe I'm misunderstanding and this sort of learning model could always be done using real-world nonfictional examples, but I'm not sure.

stories are not lies because the people listening to them know they are not materially true and there are actual problems when a story is told in such an ambiguous way that some people think they are factual

Re: Miracles ... was it Arthur C Clark? Any significantly advanced technology will look like magic? I wonder about calling them "lord" and the only explanation I have is that is how they are refered to in the game and it carried over. Just a wild guess (hypothesis) Going back to Lovecraft, I got Lovecraft vibes when Evans was talking to the San-Ti. Lots of dread and implied horror. Excellent episode again. See you in episode 5!
