Attack on Titan 4x01

Here we are! I will switch to another version for the next episode, don't worry. =D

Attack on Titan 4x01

Comments

"All creatures drink of joy at nature's breast" Not positive, but isn't this line that the soldier quotes in the trench from the final movement of Beethoven's Ninth? As it's sung in German our reactor may know better than myself, but I am thinking it is a translation from that.

Khalayx

soon =) Need to record sololeveling tomorrow to finish it and then frieren ending and then I will dig into s4 more =)

M U

waiting patiently for more aot reactions but its so hardd 😣

What I find interesting is how Marley weaponise Eldians in their war with other nations, in turn causing more hatred / disgust / fear of Eldians rather than the people of Marley - even if they are innocent and removed of agency, like the Eldians tied up and turned into titan bombs. Those soldiers guarding the Fort see those abominations bringing death and destruction and thus they become pure 'devils' in their mind.

Na its Floch

This is something I continue to struggle with to this day. I see cgi sequences of titans from S4 (incl the long finale episodes) and mentally I begin to downgrade the show, losing immersion. It makes rewatches of S4 difficult. But then I rewatch S1-3 and it jumps back up to top 3 favourite shows of all time. It's frustrating because I don't want to nitpick but Season 4 with WIT / consistent style would easily crown the entire show as my number 1 as the story is phenomenal and reaches new heights imo. It was so close to the perfect 10/10. but when the cgi is poor, it's really poor. I also miss small things WIT would bring in terms of immersion such as the weird noises attached to title cards / small moments that break up the episode. WIT's direction had a different feel / tone in general. I actually still love the general art direction by MAPPA (bar excessive hatching at times) and the S4 OST is brilliant, but S1-3 is perfect. I do not blame them for the cgi at all. Damn corporations, execs and deadlines ruining art. At this point I've kinda accepted it does bother me and I can't really ignore it, but I will never let it prevent me from recommending the show, sharing my love for it and engaging in discussions about it. S4 still has my favourite ending song of the whole show which is from the start of the season.

Rob

Probably in the minority, but it took me a handful of episodes to even warm up to season 4, art style felt pretty rough, but it all comes around for me. Manages to hit the same highs as the other seasons, so I definitely enjoyed it, but I think I just prefer a show with a coherent style/feeling/story from start to finish. Bet you have some incredible stuff to react to this season though!

I’m trying to understand this comment but not really getting it. There are very, very obvious parallels to painter guy themes. Of course it’s not exactly the same, it’s done in a way to fit narratively within the AoT world, but SWS has already said that many extremisms are criticized through the story in a mish mash of ways. Why do you take issue specifically with the obvious painter people parallels?

Kevin

Oh boy, here we go. Subbed to Patreon when I saw how close you were to finishing out Season 3 and I eagerly look forward to Season 4's reaction content. I love all the characters introduced in this portion of the show, and the proceeding episodes have some of my favourite pieces of characterization in the series.

Vincent

I'm going to reiterate this point again. It's not like the painter guy or painter guy themes. It's more like the Marleyans, and the rest of the world, view the Eldians who were left behind as the descendents of those who previously conquered them. This is why they view them as decedents of colonizers, or to use the modern parlance of our times, "oppressors" that allegedly ethnically cleansed their people. So, it's the thinking of the "sins of the father" taken to its natural extreme end because Eldia's sons/daughters have the ability to be transformed into Titans due to their genetics/blood. It's also why everyone in the world calls them devils. Which you touched upon for a little bit in this reaction.

Drift3r

kinetic bombardment is one of the most gruesome and metaphorically accurate images

HAL

same as the woman armin shot back in the kenny arc

HAL

founding titan could keep you in the lead for long enough to catch up on military technology

HAL

Yep, DS has some really great war commentary segments.

Anna Kyruin

The part where Falco hits his head and says “wasn't I just flying around with swords”, it could be some precognition or memories flowing through time, but also it seems like a little meta-joke about the confusion of watchers going from season 3 to season 4 😅 And it seems that the loss of titans at Paradise really was crucial for Marley, imagine if they had Colossal, It would nuke the whole fort in one blast. Yeah, technology will overcome titans at some point, but in WWI level wars they still look very useful at warfare. Thank you for reaction!

Aidos Smagulov

Finally got to watch! I seriously can’t wait to see all your S4 reactions. AoT season 4 is my favorite season of television ever produced, watching others experience it never gets old

Kevin

It is a lot more true to his artstyle, but only at the moment, Isayama's art at the beginning was honestly... pretty bad. WIT did the best with what they could. Sucks that MAPPA wasn't given more time aswell as you can see hoow much better their cgi got in the later parts and having time to add 2d titan shots aswell

Kurisu

Marley's use of almost exclusively Eldians in their army units is honestly horrific, especially with how little care is given to those that are not warriors or warrior candidates. They're used for suicide squads, for titan bombardments, and for child soldiers in the case of the warrior candidates. The few Marleyan soldiers we see are in much safer conditions (i.e. commanders, zeppelin pilots).

Tricky

If you look back at the episode where Historia is reading the note from Ymir and sees Ymir's memories, you'll notice that the last memory of Ymir's it shows isn't one we'd ever seen before.

chrissquid

Loved the reaction and analysis! Your observations about Magath and Gabi were very sharp. I also agree that the writing for the children is horrifyingly realistic, which I appreciate, Isayama is amazing. It almost gives me chills when I reflect on my childhood; similar to Gabi, I was always eager to prove myself and receive praise from authority. Makes me so thankful I grew up in a free and loving environment, it's scary how easily I could have been brainwashed and used, as I think a lot of inherent parts of my child personality would have made me especially susceptible to it.

Russell Gambardella

Season 4 let’s gooooooo!

Russell Gambardella

I think its Flocke not Floch

Benzoni

The Mid-Eastern soldiers hesitating to shoot a child and being killed because of it is really sad. Their humanity became their downfall. There is just something really wrong about killing children and, even though they knew they had to shot Gabi, none of them wanted to be the one to pull the trigger. For Zeke at the end, I think he thought he was out of range. They mentioned that the Mid-East Forces had been introducing some new technology in this battle, so this was probably the first time that Zeke was facing an enemy able to match his range and he was clearly surprised about it.

Krul

I think Death Stranding has trenches too.

puremetalcore

Took a while but we're finally here. We've had people vs titans, we've had people vs titan-people, and we've finally landed on... people killing people. We're in a real war now.

FullHeart

I want to comment something but I'd need to know if you've seen E2 of S4 first. Overall I think this episode had you exactly where Isayama intended. We all start out "WTF, when? Why? who? What?" because they drop us into the battle at Fort Slava with no context. This season is such a different tone from all the previous ones and the change in animation studios also adds a much different flavor to the animation. FYI that is the reason Beast and Armored look so much different, it's a different studio's take on Isayama's art. I'm not 100% certain since I've not read the manga but I've heard this studio is much truer to the original art and less "anime aesthetic".

Anna Kyruin

Yeah, I was told Blu-Ray has better subs, so now I am confused :D

M U

No, it was not Bunker. I played Bunker to 100% and was really disappointed. Still ove SOMA and Dark Descent the most. =D

M U

I think the horror game that had some of the player navigating through war trenches was "Amnesia: The Bunker", one of the better games in the Amnesia series of horror games (all of which are independent from each other story-wise and can be played separately).

BlastYoBoots

Haven’t watched yet so you may answer this in the video, but what do you mean another version? Please don’t switch to the Blu-ray for Season 4. It has slightly better graphics in a couple scenes than Crunchyroll, but at the expense of having very, very bad subtitles. It’s difficult to exaggerate how badly the Blu-Ray ruins the dialogue and writing of the show. Perhaps you mean something else though, once I watch I’ll delete this comment if I interpreted that wrongly!
