Attack on Titan OP/ED 5

Pretty interesting lyrics, though the visuals are a bit weird...

I'm late to this video but with the Linked Horizon openings, the singer frequently sings one word while the official written lyrics show a different word in that place. So in the case of the line that has beasts/gods, he sings the word "kami" (gods), but the text of the official lyrics shows the kanji for "kemono" (beasts) in that place. In Japanese, you'll often see what's called ruby text or characters placed over kanji that may be uncommon or difficult to read in order to show the reader the correct pronunciation or reading. Here they're using ruby text to imply double meaning. Basically it's saying that in this case to read the word "beasts" as "gods". I'm fascinated by Linked Horizon's work for Attack on Titan and this is a prime example of how much care and intricacy they put into the writing of these opening songs.

Just a cool detail, but in the OP after Armin wakes up, the immediate next frame is of Armin's burnt head. Obviously, if you're just watching it normally, it would be impossible to spot it but imagine if someone went frame by frame when they first showed this OP on ep 13 and saw that

Yeah, just remember to watch until "to be continued".

Zeke had planted the people who he summoned in the ground beforehand because they knew the scouts were coming. There’s a panel in the manga that shows this but it’s not in the anime. Not really planted but they show piles of dirt and bags with breathing tubes so they were alive the whole time. How long they were underground for is unknown but could be hours to a couple days. Looked it up and it’s actually in the anime as well https://imgur.com/twRhitp

As for the ED, I feel like a song that starts with "Goodbye World" was so perfect for S3P2 as there are several episodes where we are saying goodbye to someone. First we say goodbye to Reiner (though it is a fake out) then we say goodbye to Hange (also a fake out) and Moblit then we say goodbye to Erwin (tentatively) +Scouts +Recruits, Then we say goodbye to Armin (as a fake out) then we say goodbye to Berthold and truly say goodbye to Erwin, and then finally in a way we say goodbye to the last of Eren's innocence. It's really quite perfect for the ED to be a lament of departure.

Yeah, this is absolutely the most spoilertastic OP in AOT imho, and anime in general. I think it's a great OP if you're a manga fan who is watching the AOT anime after reading the manga (which I think must be the assumption from the studio) but I'm so glad you skipped it XD
