Attack on Titan 3x21

Almost done with the season... =(

Attack on Titan 3x21

Comments

Regarding the title, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. The Japanese title is “Shingeki no Kyojin,” wherein kyojin means titan and no indicates possession. Shingeki is an odd word, as there is no real English equivalent. The best approximation is something like a military advance, or a charge. A literal translation would then be “The Titan of Advancing.” Similarly, all other titans use this naming scheme. “Shiso no kyojin” = The Titan of Founding. “Yoroi no kyojin” = The Titan of Armor, etc. The thing to keep in mind though is that this is deliberately odd Japanese. The “no” particle is not supposed to be used in this manner, and as such the direct translations sound just as odd as the Japanese version sounds. The result is that the title becomes a triple entendre: 1. Because of the unnatural use of “no,” most Japanese readers (incl me) would turn the phrase around in their minds into “Kyojin no shingeki” or “Advance of the titans” 2. This "Kyojin no shingeki" phrase could also be interpreted as “Advance *on* the titans,” aka the fighting back from the cast against the titans 3. Lastly, as becomes clear throughout the show, shingeki no kyojin becomes the name of the protagonist, the attack titan. As is hopefully made clear, the Japanese title really encompasses the entire narrative of the story in its three short words. So how do you possibly localize something like this? These is no English equivalent to “shingeki,” so you already start off on the back foot trying to get across the entire meaning of the phrase, but attempting to maintain the triple entendre in the English title is a fool’s errand. So instead Isayama chose to keep the most important initial meaning of the phrase, the fighting back against the titans. Thus we get Attack on Titan. It’s a shame, as the title drop really works wonders in the Japanese, but I really don’t think you could ever feasibly localize the title perfectly while still keeping it marketable.

Lmao at your reaction to the end of the episode. Isayama really knows how to mess with our minds haha. Also, you actually already noticed and answered your question about Mikasa’s condition upon exiting the jail cell earlier in the episode, maybe just didn’t immediately connect the dots. As you said, hearing that Eren and Armin believe they’ll die in around 8 and 13 years due to the “curse of Ymir” is beyond horrible for Mikasa. That’s why she lost weight and looked out of it, she was simply very depressed.

Now, at least, you know why Beast Titan was able to control pure Titans. Another thing to remember that eldians in the walls still has military in the power together with Zachary, even if Historia their queen, I would interpret it your way - "what freedom cost for everyone, what's the limit" - this is the answer from Eren, he doesn't want to sacrifice Historia, his fiend 🤷 And again, your attention to details 🤯 now I can't pont them, it would be kinda spoiler, but I can't wait for 4th season

puremetalcore

the hints at timeywimey are no longer a complete spoiler there's at least prophecy stuff going on

HAL

25:40 half of all animes basically being about child soldiers and one pointing out speicifcally how fucked up that is

HAL

its a bit ambiguous and attack titan sounds way more generic, it might have gottne way less widely known

HAL

the 13 years only start once you get the titan uri was already pretty old when he did but now we know why he had limited time and why hte royal family had to have neough childrne each generation and keep passing it on the hwole royal family setup makes a lot more sense but also gets a LOT darker with that information like yes, she didn't know it at the time but when rod offered historia to "become god" and she refused he was also dooming her to death in 13 years and she escaped that cycle of getting eaten

HAL

11:50 every other reactor: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sws: oh wow thats new

HAL

Great reaction! Can't wait for you to start season 4

I mentioned before that I really like the idea of the Founding Titan (in royal blood hands) as this ancient being that is being passed down generation to generation. Here we learn that it is an ancient being that has been witnessing the horrors of war for almost 2,000 years and it is extremely tired of it all. The Great Titan War was probably the last straw, so his plan was to just lock himself behind the walls and wait for Marley to eventually invade the Island and take his life. He failed to create paradise, but at least he built a world without war and probably that was more than enough for him.

Krul

Why do they call out his age? Because they think he is behaving like a moody teenager. It's not that complicated...😂. And yes he wants to save Historia from being used, and having her life shorten, so this is why Eren says nothing. Also again, think Treaty of Versailles. Or perhaps post WW2 reparations and controls placed on the losing parties, but with a stronger "Sins of the father" narrative/agenda being pushed, and it starts to make sense. Lastly, EVERYTHING will get wrapped up and explained to you eventually. You just have to learn to love the "To be continued..." screen because eventually you'll only be left with the "The End" screen and then you'll be sad about there being no more AoT episodes. 😢

Drift3r

Yeah, I think it's just because "Attack on Titan" is just a better and catchier title than "Attack Titan" or any other translation. Even then, "Attack Titan" isn't really accurate either as far as i know, as "Shingeki" is closer to "advance", "charge" or just moving forward in general, which i think is the most fitting way to think of it. As Kruger says, a titan that has always moved forward in search of freedom.

As far as I know, Isayama, author of original manga, chose “Attack on Titan” translation himself, despite the fact that the translation isn't quite right. The first use of “Attack on Titan” was in the japanese version of the manga, on the cover. It seems because Isayama came up with that way before the english version existed, the english version just used that instead of creating a more accurate translation. Thank you for reaction!

Aidos Smagulov

Oh damn cant wait to check out your story im so dense i didn't realize you wrote 😂

david ammerman

It did say the coordinate transcends time and space 😎

david ammerman

I never knew that! :O

BlastYoBoots

Sieg, not Zecke Someone said to me that you know this, but you don't seem to know that it's actually only spelled Zeke, so English speakers pronounce it correctly. his name is not the German word for an Insect Zeke but the German Word for Victory Sieg hope you can change that and say his name correctly

Ghost of Omsk Дух Омска

planting new implications after THAT twist before is one hell of a writing move

HAL

I love how these 2 episodes reframe the Season 2 finale in a much better light. I understand when new watchers watch the scene with Eren/Mikasa/Smiling Titan they may be a little put off, because from the information they know, it’s seems like a massive coincidence the smiling Titan just happens to show up, and then Mikasa gives a pep talk to Eren and suddenly he gains the power to control titans. But then we find out that the smiling Titan was there because it’s following her final thoughts subconsciously to follow Grishas blood, and Eren activated the power through touching a royal bloodline Titan. Isayama is amazing!

Kevin

Man you’re so perceptive! It makes your reactions so much more enjoyable! Attack on Titan is a show that rewards you for paying attention & parsing out plot points, both as you go linearly through the story, & when you think back on it/ rewatch it.

Paris Hardy

Exactly, it’s also why the Royal family had so many kids. The Line Must Always Be Propagated so that when one Founder reaches its 13 year lifecycle, the next inheritor is ready to step up and eat them.

Paris Hardy

OH!! Something I forgot to mention in 3x20 is that the reveal of the island where the walls are, and the shape of where it is on the world map... seems to be an intentional reference to THE MADAGASCAR PLAN, one of the precursor ideas to the "solution". Which those not familiar with painter german history can look up on Wikipedia.

BlastYoBoots

Yes, this was definitely a big reveal moment. One of the great rewatch triggers of the series ^_^

I think when they keep mentioning Eren's age that's partially the mangaka reminding the audience this is a 15 year old child, but in fiction I think they keep doing it as an excuse for avoiding talking about what they all know is happening (Eren having memories that aren't his flood back) without putting Eren on the spot. In one sense it's them being nice and not making a big deal about it (except Hange at the beginning) but in another way it is creating distance between them. It feels like a bit of a wall is growing between them because of how Eren has become so obviously something more than the 15 year old child he should be. He just experienced the formative memories of a 50 something year old man. If we're talking about core memories centering identity, who is Eren now? Do they even know him anymore? This I think is what they're avoiding discussing openly and why Armin says "it wouldn't be right in front of Eren".

Anna Kyruin

Your reaction to the final lines of the episode did not disappoint.

Anna Kyruin

One more thing you remarked on in the video that you've likely already figured out, regarding how Uri was so old-- he was that old because he was older when he ate their father and inherited the Founding Titan. Kenny's flashbacks show that Uri was getting "sick" and dying before he was eaten by Frieda. It's implied that the members of the Royal Family have been feeding the Founding Titan to each other every thirteen years. Some have theorized that this could have been a selfish reason why Rod Reiss wanted someone else to eat the Founder instead of him, to extend his life. And a chilling implication of the remark in this episode about Titans who die without being eaten being inherited by a random baby born to Subjects of Ymir-- is that whoever that baby is, they would only live to 13 years old and obviously wouldn't make a very useful Titan Warrior. If you want someone actually trained and capable to inherit that child's Titan, someone older would have to eat the child! SO much implied horror in this show...

BlastYoBoots

The reference to Hange calling out Eren for doing a cool, dramatic pose and saying his Titan's name to himself-- and Levi and later Zachary calling this a "15-year-old phase"-- is something that's a little more of a Japanese-specific so it's understandable that it seemed strange to you. Even though they don't use the word, they're referring to a Japanese trope called "Chunnibyou" (literally "Middle School Second Year Syndrome") which you can look up: "a Japanese colloquial term typically used to describe early teens who have grandiose delusions, who desperately want to stand out, and who either act like or have convinced themselves that they have hidden knowledge or secret powers". What's MORE interesting though, I think you'd agree, is what Eren Kruger says about Mikasa and Armin at the very end of the episode. And I'm not sure how much you want pointed out about hints earlier in the show that you might have missed, but if so, KEEP READING, if not, STOP AFTER THIS PARAGRAPH. First, if you go back in this episode and step frame-by-frame through the flashes of Ymir's memory that Historia saw when she touched her letter, there's at least one scene there that we've never seen before-- one that may or may not have happened yet when she wrote the letter, showing her with her arms held up in chains in a rocky room. The second thing, regarding Kruger's strange words at the end about people who hadn't even been born yet... "To save Mikasa, Armin, and everyone else," the same words Grisha said to Eren right before turning him into a titan in Eren's Season 1 Episode 9 flashback -- when viewers saw this statement at the end of the episode you just watched, they asked the question, "have there ever been any hints or signs earlier in this show of someone seeing something that hasn't happened yet"? And THERE ARE... in the FIRST EPISODE. If you look back at Episode One right after the opening theme/music, we see Eren having a dream with flashes of Titans in it... and not only do we see a blurry vision of the Smiling Titan picking Eren's Mom out of the rubble before it's even happened, the dream actually STARTS with a flash of blood being sprayed across flowers-- which if you look back at the last episode of Season 2, "Scream", is something that happens frame for frame when HANNES is bitten in half by the Smiling Titan. When Eren wakes up, he says he had such a long dream, and can't remember any of it... and Mikasa asks why he is crying. Perhaps strangest of all in retrospect, though, is the NAME of the first episode, which is the same as the name of the very first chapter of the manga: "To You, 2000 Years In The Future". Everyone I've ever seen put that together has gotten goosebumps.

BlastYoBoots

Wish I had popcorn ^_^ (I lie, I don't eat popcorn because I have sensory issues and the flakes of kernel that will undoubtedly get lodged in my gums drive me utterly insane.)
