Dune 2 Review

As is tradition... man, this reminded me so much of the start of my channel... =)

Dune 2 Review

Comments

I missed the first one during the Covid years and only got to watch it about a month ago at home. I absolutely loved it. For the second one I made sure to watch it on opening weekend and it was absolutely amazing. This really feels like is going to be one the greatest sci-fi movie series ever, and I'm so glad I was able to experience it in cinemas this time. Loved your review. I haven't read the books, so my take may be completely off, but it seems to me that after Paul drank the water of life he saw the possible futures that were at his disposal and realized that war was inevitable, that all the upcoming death and destruction was unavoidable and he is simply choosing what he thinks is the best path. Not from an idealistic point of view, not to bring freedom to the Fremen or the Empire, not to replace the current system by something better, he is simply going to war because that's the only option he sees to save the people that matters to him. He is approaching it simply as something that has to be done and detaching himself from the horrible consequences that his actions will bring. He is a very interesting character and I'm very excited to see where the next movie may take us.

In response to the Jihad criticism - I would highlight that on second viewing you really pick up on this a lot more. In the film it is more subtle, and usually told through Paul's fear of the Southern Fundamentalists / going South (as well as conversation with Gurney where he states billions will die as he gains control, and conversations with Jessica too). The main focus of the film in regards to the Jihad is clearly highlighting Paul's shift in tone after he can *see* due to drinking WoL, bringing forth the cautionary tale of a charismatic leader (leading the Fremen to paradise). This is why the change to Chani is so integral for the film, and I for one love it, as through her perspective after Paul drinks and opens his mind, he becomes far more distant, almost untouchable/unreachable, and you can palpably feel it is due to the weight/burden of what his mind can now see and the power he now holds over the Fremen. With Part One and Part Two as a combined story there is definitely a clear seed planted about the atrocities over the horizon. You may have not picked it up due to the dub too, so I recommend watching in English - for example Paul sounds so dejected at the end where he tells Stilgar to lead the Fremen to paradise. This film decides to lean more into implicit interpretation of what Paul is seeing rather than being explicitly told like in the book, which again I'm sure is dramatic effect for Part 3 - and could really work for this trilogy. What I will say is that the film doesn't touch on the fact Paul sees the Jihad as perhaps a 'necessary evil' in order to achieve the Golden Path, however, I'm sure this will be addressed in Messiah. On second viewing too you pick up on the subtleties in Paul's fear of chani's death, which is repeated to him in a vision before finally giving in and going South. This also hints at key book themes to come, without outright spoiling Chani's death in Messiah for non-book readers, which will of course have a larger emotional impact in the final film, whilst re-contextualising those quick Part 2 visions.

Found your channel in the build up to Dune Part 1 - We go again for Messiah! Incredible film and adaptation, even as a huge book fan for years. Would love a video where you discuss what you would like to see from Messiah, I have already made a list on my phone notes that I will add to once I read it again after this current Dune re-read!
