Attack on Titan 3x20

Here it is, tons of tangents, but I hope enjoyable. If you find any mistakes, let me know, I might have to re-upload because of saying the N**i word once, but we will see. =D

Attack on Titan 3x20

Comments

what's really crazy is in season 2, when Dina gets killed by other titans, we were all celebrating that moment, finally... revenge. But now knowing it was Dina, trapped in a neverending dream, her death was so gruesome for a victim of systematic oppresion.

flyingbread

Exactly. Because the way the blinders come on when a certain faction emerges later…

Paris Hardy

Nice Six Feet Under reference, caught that

Kevin Clark

I’m impressed how easily you absorbed and understood everything. One of the greatest reveals in media imo. Season 4 is going to be so painfully rewarding given how well you understand the story and characters, looking forward to your reaction and thoughts!

Russell Gambardella

ive seen multiple people say this but idk if im convinced tbh

chrissquid

at some later point someone who knows more than me could probably write an entire thesis just about how this japanese anime influenced by german culture deals with our shared past in wwii and with how they each in general deal with the responsibility of remembering and avoiding its repetition differently though the references are kindof mixed around and its far far from its only meaning

HAL

you have responsibiity based on your situation and the history oyu ahve to remember but not guilt for things you haven't done though I think soviet deportation was mostly excuses for just randomly mixing people up basically a strategic move, if you forcefully resetllte everyone halfway through the country there's less risk for separatist movements because noone is in the place or with the people they were in/with before hte soviet union, the soviet union is all you have anymore so you're more likely to stay loyal to it

HAL

to be fair, we hear this from marley if you're going to oppress people, assuming oyu don't straight up lie about their history you'd still at least use the most evil possible way to describe literally anything they did

HAL

they mix up cultures and events for a reason though, consider that many of the victims of painter germany were german you can be both german and a "star people" (there is SUCH a dark humor in how algorithm speak affects these conversations) at the same time the painter said you couldn't he tried to change that but he was wrong, obviously

HAL

1:54:30 I mean speaking of self critique and this show dunking on everyone, this is kindof the show calling out its viewers with someone who lives in luxury but wants to see suffering because he "finds it interesting" and thinks "he's ready when his time comes" even though he himself has no idea what its like to suffer

HAL

1:52:00 it's important to remember that the most horrible people ever were still people because they were and its tempting to distance yourself from them by pretending they weren't but that runs the risk of overlooking their tendency in others

HAL

1:30:00 and you ahve a big wall and get killed if you try to fly over with a balloon

HAL

1:24:20 analyzing your own flaws is kinda fundamental to anything from science through to politics or philosophy serious science will have an error bar on every measurement and a statsitical/error analysis on every number engineering spends most of its time figuring out how to make failures and accidents unlikely and less deadly politics is all about reacting to or preventing catastrophes while maintainig the ability to do so

HAL

1:11:30 also sacrifice a million people to turn into a living deterrence arsenal he didn't wanna use

HAL

1:07:30 not only in the camps but also outside like this show is not actualyl a direct 1:1 metaphor for anyhting it just uses a LOT of metaphors to think about human conflict but this far it lines up pretty well using camp inmates for war is quite accurate like clearing minefields by sending inmates into them or dressing them up in wehrmacht uniforms to walk into open fields in mass and be gunned down by allied machine guns so those would give away their location and could then be sniped hearing that while visiting an old camp with school was pretty disgusting but educationally valuable imagine getting gunned down by the people coming to liberate you because your captors use you as a simple decoy also of course inmates were worked to death building supposedly fantastical but tactically flawed propaganda weapons that might actually be a really good parallel here

HAL

48:00 if you repeatedly keep going along with horrible stuff that makes one suspicious but its quite possible to just be around someone to contradict them or just be around someone and now knowing what they're up to like imagine if witnessing a crime was itself a crime that would be utterly ridiculous problem is the conservatives now think they have to shift right to compete with the far right and thats just... not strategically wise, you don't compete with another political party by copying them

HAL

41:30 you can inherit responsibility through the situation you're in but not guilt nor achievements though I think in north korea they literally pass down both medals and criminal punishments through families its utterly stupid if you look far enough everyones related to everyone if you pass down guilt we're all guilty of countless murders and warcrimes

HAL

I mean "sent to paradise" can absolutely just be a euphemism for killed

HAL

24:00 10% is a very high number when you think about it like yes a small fraction but not just many people when its 10% of a countries population but also easy to run into like you see 10 differnet people on the street every few moments, if 10% of people hate oyu and the rest don't do anything against that you will encounter hate CONSTANTLY

HAL

22:00 didn't really get to hear their stories personally/in detail and a lot of nazi collaborators or descendents later made up vague stories to distance themselves but I think this is relatively genuine one of my grandfathers actually fled from recruitment he did rather well ins chool and would've been recruited like straight to officer near the end of the war but thought the war didn't seem to be going that well so he escaped on a bike to a farm in southern france other one I know even less about but he fought in russia and got captured for a while but from the stories I did hear directly people found it shocking in hindsight how normal everything felt while living through it as a child you just perceive all the horrible stuff as background noise that doesn't directly affect you and as a child you don't really have any comparison to define what is normal and what isn't and a lot of childhood pictures do look like very normal family photos except whenever there happens to be a flag in the background it just happens to be a nazi flag never got to know anyone who was already adult at the time though and with more knowledge and knowing the interwar years for comparison it must have been a lot darker I did hear from someone else that his grandpa "needed a uniform for his business and the really hardcore guys were in the SA - he didn't wanna go there - so he just went to the SS instead" which sounds utterly insane in hindsight

HAL

that could literally refer to quite a few episodes, not gonna say wich ones though :P

HAL

16:30 I think more indoctrination than war training - like much of it was presented like training but really it was more about making children believe war training is fun and glorious for later than actually teaching them anything

HAL

14:50 I didn't know, I was following orders and if I hadn't done it someone else would have, the three main excuses of 1946

HAL

Wouldn't mind if he would react to the suit in the channel. The music is really amazing.

Krul

i did it, watched the whole way throw and loved it. perfect having it on the side while working on some stuff. can't wait for the 3 hour episode when you get to "THAT" episode in s4 :D

Marc Schuster

I haven’t seen any of your AoT reactions yet and now I gotta binge-watch these as you’re about to get into my favorite season

My Toasty Toast

Yeah, I think it's really interesting how many times he propells the story forward in a new direction through his famous "plot twists". He's just really good at leaving doors open along the way and knows when and how to use them later. Here, it feels as if he's laid all his cards out and is ready for a swift conclusion, but he always has another dusin cards behind his back and never seems to run out either way.

Phthalo

Exactly what i wanted to see/expected from you this episode. The writer was pretty young too its crazy

david ammerman

Final Thought: In every way that 3x19 was trolling us by not giving us info 3x20 delivered. The level of recontextualization of the entire series up to this point is unique in media as far as I have seen. Isayama is a somewhat sadistic genius and I loved his work before this episode but afterward I feel I definitely put him on a whole other level.

Anna Kyruin

Belly laughed at 1 hour 50 mins in when you questioned why the episode hadn't ended yet ahahah

Rob

THIS!!!

Rob

Just a note, people are rewatching this episode few times because of information they got, so it's actually cool you did so detailed reaction 2h

puremetalcore

Well worth the wait!! Your reaction to Dina's Titan form was a real highlight for me. I've been waiting to see how you'd feel about her once you got to this episode and you did not disappoint. So crazy/tragic to have a bit of backstory for all these titans which have stood out through the seasons. Please continue with all your Edutainment interludes πŸ˜‰ they are much appreciated 😁

Johnuh

1:14:00 - Yes - I am glad it is as long as it is. Take as long as you need. You offer so much insight, incomparable to other reactors who just watch, make the odd comment and facial expression. This is such thorough analysis / deconstruction and wouldn't wish for anything else, it's what sets your reactions apart for me and I will always cherish / watch the entire video. MORE, GIVE ME MORE! (in Christopher Walken's Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV's voice )

Rob

ITS FINALLY HERE

Re: Ethnic Cleansing: The term as I understand it includes the attempt to irradicate the culture and identity of a group. In this case by interbreeding with those cultures and treating their offspring as Eldian rather than whatever culture their subjugated parents (and likely only the mothers, let's be honest) are from. At least that is how I read it.

Anna Kyruin

I wouldn't say their situation is like the "star people". I would instead say their situation is similar to what would of happened if the Treaty of Versailles went far further in its harshness toward people on the losing side of WW1. Why? Because the painter guy didn't come out of nowhere. Also the irony of you saying, "This could of been far worse" and then you are shown, a FAR WORSE outcome for Grisha's sister.

Drift3r

Just finished watching through! 2hrs well spent, had to break it up a bit throughout the day though. This episode is perfect in so many ways. I mean you really can just spend ages analyzing the story and themes of this episode alone. But also it's the perfect transition point because where we left off with the main trio there was a strong feeling of finale and "where do we even go from here?". Everything set up in episode 1 has been pretty much resolved after all. Then we get this episode and understand that the entire plot set up in episode 1 was just a symptom of something much much bigger. I mean this has been strongly hinted at for a while but now it's explicit.

FullHeart

That was exactly why i got ur patreon :D. S3part2 is already peakfiction but "that day" changes the meta of the story and you got it PERFECTLY even w. the immense plotdensity of the episode. Like you said you could do a whole season on grishas backstory. Aot is a gamechanger when it comes to recontextualization and plottwistwriting. You soaked nearly every detail. Many hidden soundtrack choices and anecdotes fail to reach you due to you pausing (bc of ur high focus on the dialogue) but from now on youre free to watch the "Attack on Titan Suite - Hiroyuki Sawano". It's a collection of most main soundtracks from s1-s3 that play role for the storyline and happen for certain events. It's an 18minute live concert im sure you'll like it. The main Composer of Season1-3 is Hiroyuki Sawano. From Season 4 on he works only partly on the projects while "Kohta Yamato" gets to the frontline. So it would be a good choice to watch the Attack on Titan Suite before Season4.

tris273

Shoot, I have to make my way through multiple meetings before I can watch /cry

Anna Kyruin

Love to see how long this reaction is, excited! best AoT reactor

Rob

*Me on the edge of my seat, seriously and intently listening to Malti's insightful analysis, thoughts, and appreciation for Isayama's writing* 1:02:09 - "...Zeke and Reiner and Berthold and Annie and, whatever the fuck the car thing is, do indeed want to steal the coordinate..." LMAO I wasn't expecting to laugh so hard out of nowhere :)

Russell Gambardella

Zeke's resentment towards Grisha is mainly because of the fact that he never treated Zeke as a son, only as a tool and a means to an end for Eldian oppression.

Rommel Dean

Very much agree with the two thoughts from the video: 1. About the fact that people who have been involved, or are involving now, in horrific crimes - often don't look like the opera villains from books or TV series. I agree that there are outright scumbag villains in life, but it's like most of the people, who make horrible decision or acts, look like your next door neighbor. They have words to "justify" themselves, to "rationalize" their behavior. Often they see nothing wrong with the acts they commit. As Hannah Arendt wrote, evil is often committed by ordinary people who accept as the norm the established order in society and faithfully fulfill the obligations prescribed to them by the existing law. All of this is not at all a word of justification for these people, but rather a reminder to myself that the worst things can look trivial. 2. I agree with the idea, if I understand SWS correctly, that collective guilt, e.g. for crimes committed by ancestors, sounds like a wrong idea. After all, regardless of her ancestors' actions, for example, Faye, Grisha's sister, certainly didn't devour and subjugate anyone. If we take examples from history, in the Soviet Union during and after the WWII whole nations (like crimean tatars or chechens and ingush) were violently deported from one region to another, who were accused of allegedly collaborating with Germany. Obviously, the death rate among the forcefully resettled ethnicities was horrible. However, it seems to me that I can certainly be wrong here, we must distinguish between collective guilt and responsibility. I assume that guilt can only be personal. But collective responsibility is a society's desire not to repeat the mistakes and sins of the past, to correct them, if possible. I like this example: imagine you're sitting in your home, minding your own buisness, and suddenly you hear the doorbell ringing. You open it, and in front of you lies a crying abandoned baby in swaddling clothes. It is not your fault (guilt) that someone abandoned him, it was not you who put him under the door crying and hungry. But you still have some responsibility, at least to give him temporary safety and then call an ambulance and go to the police. Appreciate advertisement break at the middle of reaction πŸ˜… Retrospectively, it’s really crazy how Grisha's comrades and loved ones caused Eren so much suffering. In first season the Smiling titan ate his mom and in second season Hannes, the Charles Darwin titan ate himself, and the other titans ate his squad. The thought on which version of the story is correct. I'm just a bit ahead of you on the series, so this isn't a spoiler, but a guess β€” it looks like we have the "victorious" version of history from eldians, from the texts deciphered by resistance, and the "victorious" version of history from marleyans, the official propaganda. And it's seems both aren't true, at least completely true πŸ€” What is written above is purely personal opinion, did not mean to hurt anyone with incorrect wording 🀝 Thank you very much for reaction and for thoughts you shared with us!

Aidos Smagulov

Thank you so much, we can see you worked hard to get this one out. Loved it!

daragh faro

Joined this Patreon when you were still in Season 1, and have been looking forward to this episode reaction from you more than any other reactors I’ve watched. Glad to say it lived up to all my expectations! I love all of AoT, but S3 part 2 and S4 are what catapult it to my favorite story of all time. Cannot wait to see your S4 reactions!!

Kevin

The big reveal, can’t wait to see your reaction and hear your thoughts on this one!

Russell Gambardella

Thank you Thank You! For this reaction & discussion. So many other reactors stare at the screen & let the info pass them by & are unable to engage with the material. I think what you said is absolutely correct & you will see it more & more in this show. Ideology, evil, corruption, … even hatreds are all HUMAN maladies. β€œWho do you think is the enemy?” -Erwin. The most frightening & horrific atrocities all emerge from a ordinary human places. It’s frighteningly easy to get swept along in the current if you are not vigilant. β€œI want those that get swept along to be seen as human too.” -Annie I had the privilege of knowing an older German woman from my church when I was young who I had conversations with/interviewed for my school. She had very much the same view points I think as the people you mentioned . I wish I still had some of my old recordings I did with her.

Paris Hardy

[55:15] if you remember ending of second season, scene with all 9 Titans, there was this sign "X"

puremetalcore

Gotta love the intro: "Let's hope for some information". Well, you asked, so you should receive, lol
