Regarding trolls, I think as the mythology went south into modern germany over time they became smaller and more of a trickster fable type creature, but the norse origin they were kin to giants and were extremely strong and fast monsters. At the point of time and culture of the show them referring to Thors as a Troll is an attestation of his strength in battle.
