Attack on Titan 3x16

Comments

psychologically speaking you are indeed fighting monsters nowadays, modern weaponry makes it pretty easy to fight osmeone without seeing them face to face or as human

HAL

playing at war can be interesting or meaningful if you critically question it but just falling for militarism, even with some appearent meaning in it leads to well... pointless deaths

HAL

this two parter turns into a wonderful deconstruction of overly ambitious militarism there's a whole philosophical/psychological topic on how "hero-systems" let us metaphoriclaly beat mortality by becoming part of something greater but in war that is often a lie as most deaths turn out to be just horrible and meaningless in the end they all sacrificed their lives, understandably following a quite meaningful speach but in the end to capture one guy who escaped anyways and for hte few survivors to just be completely trumatized by that experience

HAL

16:00 I mean they're kinda built for short range so they're not really stable and a strong gust from the side can turn them and blow them away - at least that would make sense - they are just long and pointy

HAL

4:10 you can also arguably be wrong about something without making a single mistake in an uncertain situation you can estimate htat some outcome is more probable and you cna be absolutely correct about that and also incredibly unlucky

HAL

2:00 well, he has gallows humor and he made a pun thats impossible to translate and the first attempt at doing so kinda stuck around

HAL

Carthago = Carthage in english.

You totally get erwins arc i think many rewatchers still haven't even grasped it. Was erwin the best those in the walls could ask for as a commander? Maybe. Were his motivations ultimately selfish and short sighted? Yes. He redeemed himself

Zeke is Sieg not Zeke they only spell it this way for the english audience

Ghost of Omsk Дух Омска

Erwin's character arc is so masterfully written. I'd like to elaborate on the point you made about his dream being his absolute priority, and any concerns for humanity were secondary. I know you mentioned having watched further to at least S3 E20, so to those who may be watching AOT for the first time alongside Malti's reactions, don't read any further as this assumes you've seen S3 E18. The reason it's so easy to love and root for Erwin despite having a selfish dream/motive (which in itself, is very human and relatable): While his motive is selfish, there's no doubt every action he took in pursuit of this aligned with the benefit of humanity up until this point (largely due to the nature of the government); when there finally came a crossroads where this would not be the case, he made the ultimate sacrifice and went through with giving up on his dream and dying for the benefit of humanity. It's amazing how Isayama alludes to this situation earlier in S3 with the Coup d'etat arc. Erwin is brought in to be executed under the pretense of violating clause six of the Humanity Charter, "prioritizing one's own gain over the safety and longevity of humanity." Ironically, Erwin's "own gain" has always been in direct alignment with the benefit of humanity, which is precisely why Pixis ends up supporting him. Since there is no negative tradeoff for humanity despite Erwin's driving force, the viewer can fully invest themselves into Erwin without feeling guilty or conflicted. This makes Erwin's sacrifice of his life and dream for humanity so tragically beautiful. He never crosses that line despite his dream within reach on the other side of it. Backs against the wall (of Maria :P), the final rows of housing rapidly crumbling, there's no time to check and come back. It's humanity, or the dream, each at the cost of each other. It's even more powerful as Erwin's choice isn't a mere gesture or poetic choice; as he said, his presence in leading the charge was an absolute requirement for the plan to give them the slim chance of victory. Without him leading the charge. (and making that EPIC speech) the soldiers would not follow.

Russell Gambardella

Erwin speech in this episode is such a hymn to existentialism. Whenever he says: "We die trusting the living who follow to find meaning in our lives!" it just makes me tear up. Another wonderful episode, can't wait to see your reactions to the rest of the season!

You are not out of the Trauma Trinity but you just have to "Keep pushing forward".

Mind disintegrated.

Curious if you watched 3x16 to 3x20 in the same sitting or not, because that would be brutal.

8:46 To "Pitch a Perfect Game" in Baseball means you as the pitcher out-played the players up to bat repeatedly every time your team wasn't at bat. In other words the other team never even manage to hit the ball. It's the most humiliating way to be defeated.

you NEED to check out erwins speech in dub at some point its one of the best dub pieces ive ever heard, gives goosebumps every time!
