Wow, this episode resonated with me. In my family, my great-great grandpa if I remember correctly had a nice farm under his name and lived there with his family. When the Bolsheviks came to power, one day they took him and he was never seen again. The family was promised a better life, which was a lie. They were sent to deep Siberia to work.

2024-02-08 20:37:43 +0000 UTCIf you think about the scouts being a sort of a "controlled opposition" acting as a false proof that at least they're trying — knowing that, it sort of makes sense when you realize where the best trainees go. The best recruits, the ones most suited to fight titans and explore, are sent to the military police. No one ever expected or wanted the scouts to actually make any meaningful progress. Also yeah the mother is the worst. I genuinely think she's a worse person than someone like Annie or Reiner. At least they have a sense of humanity and only do things because of some motivation we dont know yet but it's a *purpose*. They even feel guilt over what they've done. The mother is a monster by comparison. That she never spoke to her own daughter and wished death on her multiple times is horrific. The only regret she feels is that she didnt get to be worse and actually kill Historia.

Regardless of the fact that Historia basically represented a clear and present danger to her life, it takes a special kind of person to only say that to their child. Canonically Historia is 9 or 10 years old here as well. Ten years of not speaking to her daughter and that was all she had to say.
