Edit: I had forgot to add the 3d artist credit.
Government’s buildings are not always built with that intent in mind, bases and prisons, officially and unofficially, and sometimes even worse, and with all those resentments, not to mention the one's out of the soul crush-ness of bureaucracy it's no surprise most of these places end up cursed. Twisting and bending and sometimes opening doors to other places. Worst Places.
Places devoid of sense and logic, but not of rules and surveillance. And after having split and faced the living maze from both the north and south, Nicole and her friends have found each other again in the middle. Is their adventure close to finishing? Well, the thing is that the rules can still change.
…
I didn't really have a plan for this one except that I wanted big things with the whole gang, cause I realized that most of this year's pieces were one-character focused and intimate, which of course isn't a bad thing.
I've wanted to do something with a spiral staircase since last year when I was watching one of those ghost hunting videos on a haunted lighthouse. In fact I thought it was originally going to be set on a lighthouse, I've also wanted to try nautical horror again like with the mermaid piece, but this piece really clicked in my mind when I added the big eye below them. Or above them?
First I thought it could be a big mouth they're clearly running away from. But when I added the eye, the vibe became more ambiguous, maybe the eye is just surveillancing them. And because of that the song that has been playing in my mind all the time while working on this is Alan Parsons’ Project “The Eye on the sky” and I think it's a good match.
In the end I was guided by a vibe of ambiguity so strong that I actually had a hard time coming up with a story for this one, and personally that's why I liked it. I myself have so many questions, where are they? How did they get there? What's the fourth eye? How are they going to get out? It's fun to think about.
When I started sketching I was already doing the math to draw the spiral staircase when I thought of using a 3d model as reference. I found a good one that wasn't very expensive, so I bought it and immediately found an even better one for free. Story of my life. The one I used was modeled by 3d artist: xhable
The rest of the work I did myself. Though. Lol
One of my favorite things about this piece is that it can be read well whichever way you flip it. And for fun, realizing the proportions and composition I thought it could be fun to make a fake poster or movie cover, which gave me a reason to make a Whisperers Logo. The band has one, why wouldn't these guys?.
It isn't the final one, I made it quickly for fun but I like where it's going, it seems incomprehensible at first sight but it doesn't take take to realize that it's just normal text upside down, so it already forces you to put attention and while not necessarily part of the logo, I thought I'd be fun for the logo to be presented over important redacted information. So I'm already doing branding with this thing, but just for fun. Did I ever mention I have a degree in Graphic design?
Not sure if I’d actually go with it if I ever actually published something with the Whisperers (Fingers Crossed) but it's fun to imagine for now. If you didn't know my work and ever stumbled in the wild with this as a cover or a poster for something would it pick your interest?
Yeah me neither lol.
And that's my final Whisperers piece for October this year, or at least the last one I'll be posting publicly this year,(Though I do have a silly little thing sketched out so who knows…)
