Jorge played guitar for an unknown band in Tijuana many many years ago. And Sadly the band stayed unknown until the day they disbanded. See,some weeks before he got news from his girl that he was going to be a dad, and success didn't really seem close. So they all went their own ways.
Two of them stayed in the music business and Richy, Jorge's best friend actually got to found a band that would make it big and find success as a musician until he sadly passed away in the 80s.
As for Jorge, he and his girl went the old fashioned way. They got married, moved to her hometown and he got a job in a factory to support his new family because that was possible back then, but he never let his passion for music fade away. Too bad this one seemed to skip a generation.
But the good news in the end is that he got to pass it on to his granddaughter Diana.
Some years ago I got a bit hyper fixated with the history of the Rock and Roll ban in Mexico in the 60s. There's even some pieces I did for a story about it featuring prototypes for Diana and RJ. And This is another sort of attempt at exploring that concept within my current canon.
I had mentioned Diana's relationship with her grandad before and here it is. He taught her how to play guitar and write songs. And told her many stories about his wild days with Richy and the band. Some of them were ones her mother didn't want Diana to hear, at least not at that age. And they were really close while she was growing up.
He was actually one of the first people Diana came out to as she thought he'd be fine with it after hearing many of his stories featuring Richy who was also gay and some of those stories were about that. And yeah, he was fine with it.
Featured in this piece is one of Diana's first guitar lessons at her grandpa studio. You can see some photos he recovered and had expanded on his wall. One is of a concert he and his band performed at a “Agujero Funky” and the other one is of him and Richy when they were young and beautiful. They got to talk a number of times after the band disbanded.
Another detail I like is Jorge's guitar, that if you pay attention will notice is now Diana's guitar. He gave it to her as a gift.
At the moment I can't decide what Jorge’s fate has been. On one hand I think he died cause, I mean, it makes sense. On the other hand I’d really like for him to see his granddaughter and her band make it big. That'd be nice. I'm still deciding…
This piece was based on a vibe inspired by the stop motion animated short film “Rockamilly” by Eric Ramiriez, which had a similar plot. I watched that short as part of the 2019 student selection of the Animation Festival Pixelatl. Same category I participated with my own short “El Aprendiz de Chaman” I haven’t found the full short anywhere online so I suspect it has never been posted but I did find a Facebook page promoting it.
