Vero

Or

"POV: You and your demon friends caused problems in the wrong town"

Or, I finally got to make Vero's solo piece.

I tried a couple of things with her before but I wasn't convinced. I mostly tried some silly stuff. The original idea was her punching some kind of slasher movie killer, and I still want to do something like that later, but it felt too silly. So I just started sketching and ended up with just a picture of Veronica going Beast mode.

This was also an excuse to draw her with her hair down. I drew her like that for the mermaid piece and it actually works there but I don't feel like just changing it alright.

Originally I didn't want to add blood to this piece, I felt like it was a little too obvious, maybe even a bit cliche. But they are cliches for a reason, I tried adding some just to see what's happening and now it just doesn't work as well without it.

I made a third edit as a joke in Which the blood is blue like if it were an 80s cartoon or a censored anime.

While making this it occurred to me that, maybe by accident I'm covering the different kinds of horror the whisperers bring to the table with the solo pieces.

Like Nicole's piece is more on the whimsical wholesome side of horror. Ignacio's is more on the analog found footage type Which makes sense as he's the cameraman. And finally Veronica's that is in the more visceral, shocking, even gory edgy side. Even if it is just implied here.

And yes, I want to make solo pieces for the other two whisperers following this logic but I don't think I'll have them for this October.

Mainly because of Ian's hypothetical piece. For him, and especially following this gimmick, I think it should be something touching on psychological or liminal horror. I want to do something inspired by Giovanni Battista Piranesi's Imaginary Prison and the themes of libraries. But I wouldn't even know where to start with something like that. Actually the Library piece from the other day was a bit of a rehearsal of that but it ended up being more gothic than liminal. A welcomed surprise nonetheless.

I especially want to make an Ian piece because he never had an introduction to the group really. He just sort of appeared. Which in retrospect was an intentionally genius move on my part. He just appeared in a piece about the universe resetting and never left. It was like they always knew him. If I one day found a monkey's wish hand and get to make the Whisperers show, I'm keeping that. But still…

For the doll I would do something more silly, on the comedic over the top side of horror. Maybe the slasher killer idea or something with other haunted dolls. For her I feel less pressure as she already had an amazing introduction.
