Shadows

This is mainly a piece about nothing.

Just good ol' Zara discovering that you can use the lamp on your phone to play shadow puppets on the roof.

Which is kind of fun if I may add.

Just a piece of Zara chilling in her old room at her parents house. I just had a vibe and an idea in mind for this piece when I started. And the idea was one a bit hard to work my style around because this one as you can see, is a “hand centric” piece, and most of my characters I draw with just four fingers. You know… because it’s fun. That’s what cartoons look like. And it took me a while to draw four fingered hands on the roof that didn’t look too weird to break the whole thing.

Actually I’ve been thinking very recently to go back to five fingers as my style has been getting a little bit less toony. But it would be too late for this piece.

Another thing I had fun with while working on this piece is drawing the room itself. Especially the “easter egg” in the room. First there’s a box filled with vinyl records over her shelf. If you look closely there’s a line running over them. That’s a weird mistake I made on the line art and when I noticed it, it was too late to fix. The first one on that box and the only one kind visible is “The Beatles’ Revolver”. The plan was for it to be more visible but I miscalculated the perspective for that. I like to think that the story behind that box was Zara’s Father getting it from the neighborhood stoner’s garage sale when Zara showed interest in music and rock and this being Zara’s first album collection.

And then on the bottom of the night table is her very first record player. The one her parents bought one or two weeks after her dad bought a box full of records without remembering that they did not have where to play them.

On the shelf there’s also a toy soldier bear. That’s just a fun detail because there's a similar one in my house.

Under that there’s a poster of “Pink Floyd’s Animals” which is a record I chose for this piece because I was listening to it while making this. I really wish I had a better story for why I chose it.

There’s also two posters of two singers, a rabbit and a cat, who are two of Zara’s musical inspirations for her style. The cat has done cameos in the background of two comics I’ve done. On the tv in the bar on from this comic: https://twitter.com/Katnay3/status/1464334645684842502 And on a photo on the wall of this other bar: https://twitter.com/Katnay3/status/1534639092616507393/photo/2.

There’s a postcard from Zipolite that’s a place I reference on my art very often. And a sketch of a caricature a fan gifted her once that features my Zara’s very first design. Which hasn’t changed that much to be fair.

There’s also a poster for a concert of a very well known band in Zara’s world called “Warlock’s Rage”, who was in town for a couple of concerts for which The Worndown Children opened. This was the band’s first big gig. Said concert by the way is the one happening on this piece: https://twitter.com/Katnay3/status/1395117032232865805

I drew the members of Warlock’s rage and one of them is a Gecko design I reused from a picture I did when I was coming up with the drummer for The World Down Children before I came up with Davo.

For this post I searched for that old picture, It wasn’t hard as I knew exactly in which file it was. The thing that surprised me is that apparently I back then did a second version of that drawing that also included a potential name for the band that I completely forgot about by the time I had come up with the full band. “The God-Damn its” Which Goddamnit, it’s not bad. I swear I had forgotten about that, I usually use a version without that logo that I have saved on my google drive.

And finally there’s an old family photo that Zara likes a lot. It was taken after a school play Zara was in in elementary school, It’s her parents and after the school gave her her theater certificate of participation in the play. She played an angel, she only forgot one of her lines and then sang a song. And she did it pretty well, so well in fact that many of the parents in the audience were clapping out of actual enjoyment and not only because it was a kids play and that’s what one does on those ones to be nice to the kids. That’s the night Zara fell in love with the stage. She joined the theater club in highschool for a while but couldn’t stand theater kids and because of that and another reason that I don’t wanna spoil yet but involves another character of mine, she decided to focus only on music instead.

Zara's dad does a small cameo in the background of last year's holiday special. mean while I think her mom appears in the background of another piece somewhere but I'm not completely sure wich one.

'Main character's bf meets her folks' is always potential for a good story, and it'd be a great chance to simultaneously introduce Zara's parents and develop her relationship with RJ; maybe it could be a family dinner pic or something? :)

Kinda funny how that worked out huh? lol And, Oh Yeah! I forgot to mention that. lo I thought I did. Yeah. Zara was adopted as a baby. I want to explore a bit that dynamic eventually. I actually want to make something with RJ meeting them but I'm still not sure if there a story there lol

For a piece about nothing, it does sure say a lot with all the in-universe references! :D I always like finding out more about the bandmembers' families, and the most noticeable detail to me is the adorable childhood photo of Zara with her parents, specifically their species...either Zara is adopted or interspecies genetics works reeeeally weird in this universe. XD
