Steve Wilhite who created the GIF intended for the pronunciation to use the soft "g" sound, as in Jif. GIF is an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format, which is probably why the majority of people pronounce it as GIF, hard "g", as in the word graphics.😉 Now, both pronunciations are accepted in dictionaries.
