Most likely, he would've stuck with his asshole friends, broke up with Nancy and never learned about the demogorgen. But the show creaters, The Duffer brothers really liked the actor playing Steve (Joe Keery) and decided to keep him around for now, so they wrote the redemption arc at the end of S1 and helped Nancy and Jonathan
