Lisa was pregnant in real life - I mean she had it by now, but last season she was, and she really wasn't allowed to fly to London. So when they came back for the first episode, it really was that way, that the rest of the cast and crew were talking about the fun things they did in London and Lisa felt really left out. So they wrote in this story for Pheobe because of it

Also, it’s crazy how this whole storyline with Emily was only made possible because of how they ended Joanna’s storyline. By having her die, and Rachel being moved to another department to work under Emily’s uncle, that put Rachel in a position to meet Emily. But, that wouldn’t have led to her and Ross having a relationship on its own. It’s because Rachel was pursuing Joshua that she passed off dealing with Emily to Ross, and then it’s led to here. The cause/effect outcomes on this show are insane.
