Leonidas missed this throw on purpose. He knew that he and his men were going to die there in the next few minutes, and killing Xerxes wouldn’t have changed that. If he had killed Xerxes, then, just as Leonidas said about himself, the entire Persian empire would have invaded Greece, never stopping until it was annihilated. Dead, Xerxes would have been a martyr, his people mourning the loss of their god, Persia lashing out at the world in a rage of righteous retribution. But, injured - bleeding, as Leonidas promised - and now scarred for life, his people would see that. A god cannot bleed, at least not from a mortal. Therefore, some would begin to question Xerxes’s claim of being a living god. Some would begin to realize that, while he is their king, he is also only a mortal man. And that slight bit of doubt can be enough to shake an empire to its foundations over time. Leonidas knew what he was doing, opting to only hurt Xerxes, to show he can be hurt, and let his empire begin to be weakened with doubt about his status. Leonidas didn’t fail; he hit his mark precisely as intended, leading to the shaking of the Persian resolve and the strengthening of Sparta’s own. And the rest is history.

What I love about this movie is how historically accurate it actually is, despite it appearing to the contrary, all things considered. The Persian numbers are exaggerated, and there wasn’t a guy claiming to be a God, and all of the mutant hybrids didn’t exist, but the fundamental elements of most everything else is accurate. Also if I remember they did win decisively the next year.
