I've been meaning to rewatch through it for years, and this is the perfect way 😄 Modern Family came out in 2009 and ran 11 seasons, and kind of kicked off a new wave of sitcoms in this single camera interview-style format. It's won 22 Emmys and the Golden Globe for best comedy. Being back in 2009, it was also one of the first primetime shows to focus on an LGBTQ couple figuring out parenthood, which is why we see the sort of opposing view presented in Mitch's dad - the show was a boon to bringing about a view of normalcy towards such things. Really hope you continue with the series!!

Like I will never agree that in a situation where a man and woman are both drunk, the guy is automatically a r***ist or that you can necessarily get mad at Barney for going for drunk girls when he is also in a bar imbibing and therefore is also under the influence. Both parties are and should be responsible for their own alcohol consumption and in a situation where everyone is drunk, either everyone consented or no one consented, you can't have it both ways. I also don't believe stupid lies about being famous or a genius or any of Barney's schemes removes the ability of a woman to consent, whatever she believes. In fact, I am familiar with the case law you referenced and in the few cases it has been applied, it is pertaining to non disclosed STIs or lying about being in a position of power to coerce individuals into sexual intercourse. That doesn't really apply here. I also don't think it's fair to label anyone who watches this comedy show and has a different 'visceral gut reaction' than you (i.e. finding it funny) as immature or suffering from arrested development as you have tried to do here. I will say that I didn't remember the confession and that does change things a bit although that isn't exactly nuanced either. Selling a woman would entirely fall under the nonconsenual category. But let's just agree to disagree.

But interesting comment about the "non-growing caricatures" as that's something that, for me, has always come to mind with HIMYM ;) I really like HIMYM S1-S5 but after that it falls off completely for me.

HIMYM is miles ahead of TBBT. it is based on many flashbacks,editing tricks, it is actually 3 dimensional, emotional, and the characters are not non-growing stale caricatures. Most importantly, it has good multilayered humor and real emotional scenes. Not just referencing something nerdy and expecting a laugh for that reference.

My next favorite is Modern Family - I hope you will pick this. I think its a fantastic show and you will definitely enjoy it. Long before you started this - while I was watching your reactions to all the family dynamics in friends (Ross-Monica, Ross & Monica with their parents and cameos of other parents) I was always thinking you will love Modern Family. Last time when it was BBT vs The Office - I was really hoping you'd pick The Office. I feel BBT gets a little repetitive after few seasons. And I think the same of HIMYM. Also, like others said - you just finished Friends, you are doing BBT and both are shows of group of friends. And HIMYM is also that. Modern Family is a better pick for that reason too, I feel. Anyway, this is my first comment, so - thanks again. Appreciate all your content. I loved waiting for new Friends drop every Friday. I hope it will be same with Modern Family now. (And hopefully double drops as well, like Friends). I also love your movie reactions and watched many of them multiple times. Even if you don't pick Modern Family, I will be happy rewatching your Friends reactions again from the beginning.

I would really prefer this over HIMYM (I really don't like that show, probably for the same reasons alot of people don't, but I won't say why). It does have it's moments, but overall no.

2025-01-27 04:45:46 +0000 UTCOMG yes , I just started watching Modern Family, I've been hearing about the show for years but never felt like watching it and I thought people were overhyping it especially since I watched the first episode when i was 19 and it was okay, not that funny, but when I saw so many people here recommended it to you I thought okay I'd go back and give the show a chance and now I've finished the first season in a week and it's become one of my favorite shows I can't believe I've wasted so many years sleeping on this show. I do love HIMYM too but Modern family not a bad show it’s really great and i hope you have fun watching it and you can also react to HIMYM any time later is not big deal for me I still love both shows , i think Sunday is no longer a boring day to me.😂

You can look up the case law on how lying in a way that materially affects whether someone would agree to sleep with you removes consent. It is not used a lot, but it is there, has been used, and is VERY nuanced. Consent is only not nuanced when it is done appropriately. Barny also confessed to leaving a girl in a foreign county after he was given cash or a Mercedes or both...so there is that. But whether his lies or moments when he goes for drunk girls sometimes were of a material enough nature to remove consent or not, I think most people today would have a different visceral gut reaction to him today and his friends who enable him then they did when the show came out...unless they are suffering from a case of arrested development. It's just an opinion. I still watch the show, as I don't think it is fair to judge the past by today's standards. I tell my kids, "don't get angry at the bottom rung on a ladder because it is lower. It was a necessary step in the right direction." But I do notice, and it has a different type of discomfort then it did originally. EDITE: I am not proselytizing a position, just giving an opinion. It would be a boring world if everyone agreed on everything.

If your're referring to Barney, who is really the only "problematic" character I can think of, he is obviously an awful human being but everyone he has relations with agrees to it. Just because he continuously lies about who he is doesn't make them any less able to consent to relations. He picks them up in bars and they go home with someone they just met. It's not great decision making on either party's part.

Everything just gets so much better from this, so much funnier! I think it's a good change from the live audience, laugh track shows.

You've just finished Friends and you're doing Big Bang Theory, both are shows about friendship groups, which is also the theme of HIMYM. With Modern Family, you're filling that sitcom slot with something new and different that may also get you new subscribers, as well as appealing to a lot of your current fanbase.

Had you considered it for a second you would have probably guessed, but the episode is so engrossing, well-written and funny, it's easy to overlook it. It's supposed to be a reveal at the end. I was pleasantly surprised too during my first watch! :)

Another sit com I very highly recommend that is a little bit more similar to friends is ‘new girl’ it is probably the funniest sitcom I have ever watched and all the characters are so lovable. This is not a critique I like seeing, nor have I ever used it, but I started HIMYM again, and it is...ugh, but for lack of a better word, problematic. It was really uncomfortable. It really highlights how sensibilities have changed. There is no nuance with consent, in fact it is played off as quite funny when it is not there. But it is a funny show. It is kinda like The Goonies. I love The Goonie. Still do. My sister saw it is PG, remembered loving it as a kid, and so she showed her 4th grade class it. Well, she started to. She had forgotten about all the swearing, and the maid, and the broken statue. She quickly turned it off. It doesn't mean she doesn't love the movie, but she realized her rose colored glasses obscured how inappropriate it is a a grade school class.
