I think there is a comparison here that the writers *might* have meant to do, but it's a little clunky. In this episode, Buffy says Willow has an addictive personality and she now has a taste for blood. In the previous episode, Willow essentially accuses Warren of the same thing. "You liked it." I think we're supposed to infer a few things.
1. Warren would absolutely kill another woman when the opportunity arose. 2. Comparing Willow to Warren: there is nothing good about an addiction to killing people, which they both seem to have right now. Even if you could justify Willow killing Jonathan and Andrew, she's going down a dark path that would be difficult to turn back from.
We've already seen this with Faith. How hard was it for her to admit she needed help? And I don't think she actually did enjoy killing people, I think she just believed she wasn't a good enough person and didn't deserve good things.
I wish the addiction this season had been more about power than magic itself. She even uses the word power with Warren. And in this episode with Buffy.

@Vicky N - I agree, I never cared for Alison's performance of an evil Willow in any regard. I don't care for Vampire Willow or Dark Willow either one. I will say that I agree with what Viera says, that she's meant to be empty of the Willow we know and love. But regardless, I don't find it compelling or fun to watch the way so many people seem to.

Vicky N Buffy doesn't deserve it at all. Willow is not saying truthful things. She is saying distorted versions of half-truths.Buffy is standing up for what is right the best way she knows how. But it is not helping Willow to heal her grief, so she comments only on her impression of
Buffy being unhelpful and seemingly arrogant, in Willow's eyes. And all of this is only Dark Willow,
missing all the wisdom and compassion of the full whole Willow.
Willow is also saying that Dawn would be happier as the ball of energy. Technically it is true that being human is hard and often painful,
but Willow is missing that Dawn is actively choosing to stay alive and try her best to enjoy life.
Willow says that Buffy was "happier in the ground". Technically it is true that heaven is better than life on Earth, but
also, Buffy is actively trying to do what is right daily, and not just simply end her life as an easy way out. She has happiness ahead of her, even around her, truly, in her loved ones and she is trying to heal her depression. Dark Willow disregards it and talks to her like a bully talking to a suicidal person. Sure, dying might be easy, especially if it means going back to heaven but Buffy is choosing differently and Willow ignores it.
Because all the wisdom and compassion of the full whole Willow is turned off.

glad someone finally said this. i think this everytime i re-watch these episodes. alyson can not pull off evil/bad/menacing. her monotone delivery and the lines themselves come across as incredibly cheesy to me lol. i loved the last scene with gilles though. highlight of the episode.

Can absolutely say that in Season 1 of Buffy I never ever thought we would see Willow become a Big Bad. That’s what is so genius about this show. The development over the years… just well done & keeps on surprising us.
I like Dark Willow as a character. An addictive person giving into her addictions during times of grief is completely relatable. To want revenge on the people who hurt your friends & killed your loved one. Completely relatable. She also says some excellent points about those around her in a way they need a reality check. Like how Buffy has been on a destructive path just to feel. I don’t agree with how Dark Willow views herself though but our dark side is usually negativity and insecurity.
GILES!!! He’s been so missed.

I couldn’t disagree more. Never liked “dark Willow”. I find her lines too cliche for the sake of it. Especially in her confrontation with Buffy. In what way and why does Buffy deserves to have every square of her ass kicked? And Alyson Hannigan is clearly out of her comfort zone as an actress. I find her line delivery unconvincing.

She attacked Rak and drained his powers because he helped Warren. Also, he hates floppy ears, so he's the worst. (The actor playing him also playing Kralik, the vampire in s3 ep12, 'Helpless', when Buffy used the holy water on him, tricking him.)
Willow sure was insecure in highschool. But she's only seeing parts of the entire truth. Not the whole truth:
She was attractive enough to charm Oz, and to make Xander cheat on Cordelia with her.
In college, Spike even tells her that she's pretty enough for him to bite her. The douchebag Parker is openly interested in sleeping with her or at the very least he's trying his lines on her.
She was smart, too.
She fully restored Angel's soul long before she met Tara.
She hacks the trio's cameras without Tara's help.
Her only 'loser' part was that she did not have healthy confidence, but hardly anyone had it back then. The lack of confidence was demonstrated via different ways in different characters, that's all.
She almost revealed the entire truth: She needs to have more going on for her than just the romantic partner who sadly just passed away. And she actually is much more than just Tara's partner. She just fails to see it.
Just like when in high school she failed to see how pretty she is and how quite a few boys are into her.

What to say to Willow?
Well, they all keep telling her she should stop.
That her way of coping is wrong.
They are validating her pain somewhat and Buffy said 'We love you and Tara', but then they hurry to point out what Willow is doing wrong.
Can't blame them, she indeed is dangerous to herself and to others.
But Willow's reasons for acting this way are her brain being in pain and trying to find solace, like Anya says. The outcome is not safe or healthy, but the motivation is good.
The reality still is, that
nobody is really giving Willow only love and love alone. Validation and crying with her and grieving with her. It's hard to do of course when she's acting out, but it's what she's not getting from anyone. Nobody is simply sticking with just showing her love and not adding any "you should not..."

Since you are getting closer to the end of the series, I really hope you'll do Charmed (original, not reboot) after Buffy. It's another amazing 90s supernatural show with awesome characters and stories
