Buffy the Vampire Slayer 6x7 FULL Reaction

Nothing to see here.... only the craziest episode BY FAR

Buffy the Vampire Slayer 6x7 FULL Reaction

Comments

I may be the only Buffy fan in history that doesn't go crazy over this episode xD it's not that I hate it, I just find it to be a little overrated compared to others. I do like that it is very plot-heavy so it's not the best episode to watch if you're not familiar with the show, but still. Maybe I'm just not into musicals unless they're Disney, lol. I will say that watching it 'with' Nick made it much better - especially considering he didn't know it was a musical xD and no, we do not want to hear Angel sing!

YYYAAASSS!!!! Im so excited for this. This is my second favorite episode after 'The Wish". Hehe.

I love that you honor Hinton Battle! He was such an amazing entertainer.

I would also recommend watching Joss Whedon's 'Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog' with Nathan Fillion, Neil Patrick Harris, Filicia Day and Simon Helberg (TBBT's Howard). It's a 3 part web series (42 minutes in total) which they filmed in 2008 during that year's writers strike. It can be found on YT. And is sooo good and funny. Maybe something to react too as well as it has quite the cult follwing and might bring in some viewers.

I LOVED this episode. So much so that I bought the special musical DVD way back when, even though I had the complete box set of the season already. We also went to a special screening of the episode in a movie theater. It was like a sing along event a few years after the episode originally aired, as it had become quite the cult episode by then and is to this day always up there in the top musical episodes in TV, more often than not in first place. I also still have the CD somewhere at home. 'Rest in Peace' and 'Standing' were my favorite by far, but I also really loved 'Under Your Spell / Standing - Reprise' and 'Walk Through the Fire'. Spikes song also brought me to look into James Marsters' singing and I discovered his band 'Ghost of the Robot' and their 2003 album 'Mad Brilliant'. When the band toured Europe, we got to see them live in Berlin in 2004. I've also seen him at a few conventions in Berlin (will be again in October) and every once in a while he gives mini concerts at those. His voice and Anthony Stewart Head's are outstanding, but of course we knew about Giles' capability since 'Behind Blue Eyes' in 4.18 already.

i think Nick Lang from Starkid , who made the Very Potter Musical, actually got the idea for "The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals" directly from this episode ... ... lol, Tara throwing shade at Michael Flatley, Lord of the Dance, when she talks to Dawn. Clearly, Tara shares Chandler's fear of him.

Viera Galikova

Buffy basically tries to kill herself, on purpose, when she goes into the fast dance. 2nd time this season that she was considering it. First time was at the top of the tower, when Dawn came and saved her. yeah,"disney movie" is what we associate today with this format, but musicals existed before Snow White came out in 1937 ...

Viera Galikova

Rocky Horror Anniversary show with the two of them is great! There is also a very bad recording (too far away and on an old camera phone) of Tony Head playing Frank in Rocky Horror on stage in England.

Becky Mitchell

I love that arguably the three most unique and legendary episodes of the show, HUSH, THE BODY and ONCE MORE WITH FEELING all have to do with music or lack thereof.

G. Smith

I always think of the song lyrics by Lit when Tara sings 'Under Your Spell' as they seem to be similar to her song and her arc this episode: "You make me come. You make me complete. You make me completely miserable". You aren't wrong about what they got away with on screen. Joss said they wouldn't allow them to have a love scene so this was about the best he could get away with at that time.

Dutchkel

Now, you might want to go listen to the FULL songs. Watch the CD or YouTube videos that play the full songs, because there is more to the songs that you only catch when listening to each of the songs multiple times. They did a good job of playing to the strengths of actors/actresses.

Erica Moyers

I subscribed to your Patreon months ago specifically to watch this episode hahaha! it is epic :-) Also on the CD soundtrack, theres a whole explanation about how this episode came to be and how Joss Weahdon created it and worked with the actors to figure out their vocal capabilities.

Priscila

One small but significant point: the rhymes in the lyrics are so inventive. For a start, we have to supply the rhyming words ourselves sometimes: 'You're the cutest of the Scoobies, with your firm yet supple -- tight embrace!' (Similarly with 'burn' in the fire truck song.) And when the words are there they're often very clever: 'Whenever things get rough, he | Just hides behind his Buffy...'

Paul E.

I cannot believe I never realized that as Spike is leaving, they are singing "The curtains close on a kiss, God knows We can tell the end is ne - ar ....fades Where do we go from here?"

JennaB

They kept singing and dancing after he left because he told them to. It was in the lyrics, which aren't always understood right away because there's so much to take in during every moment of this episode. He said they shared their secrets and then "now, once more, with feeling." 😉

JennaB

They kept singing because he told them "now, once more, with feeling" after the lyric about them telling their secrets. 😉

JennaB

Also, James Marsters (spike) has a band called Ghost of the Robot they have some pretty good songs.

Teresa Jay

I read comment somewhere that season 6 the big bad is depression. Buffy is dealing with it and her dancing here was a unaliving attempt... Season 6 hits on a lot of sensitive topics and I think that's what makes it so good, and why the season is so polarizing. This is also probably my most watched (definitely the most listened to) episode of the whole series.

Teresa Jay

"Everything is turning out so dark" ... yeah 😬 I wish I could say things lighten up, but from beginning to end, this season is the darkest. Your reactions were everything I was waiting for and more!! I'm so glad you enjoyed this episode. Even amongst hard-core fans, this one is a hit or miss. I personally think it's beyond fantastic and even have all the songs on my Playlist 😂 Spikes song is on my gym Playlist lol

Kristen Rose

Best....Musical.....Episode......EVER! My favorite part about this is now we really get inside Buffy's head and understand why she has been distant so much. The lyrics in "Walk Through The Fire" really break it down. Of course when we think of bringing someone back from the dead, we know there will be consequences. And I think this episode really told us what they were; she says in the lyrics she touches fire but it freezes her, all she can feel is cold like she can't feel anything anymore. Instead of fire burning her like it should, it does the opposite. It makes a ton of sense as to why that would happen if you bring someone back to life, something would be missing. Much like flooded when she is just staring at the faucet almost in a daze. And of course Spike is the one who she can help feel again, technically a dead person, ironic.

Midnight Crypt Worx

Is it Amber? Who is Tara. She is so pretty, she's suppose to be the "ugly" girl? I think she's always been pretty, maybe not SMG level, but I always thought she was so lovely. And now I hear her sing! Is this real? She sounds like she could be a pro recording artist.

Social Kid

I loved hearing how this episode set a trend for other shows. Massive props for not only being the first one, but also objectively being so well executed!

Nicholas Crowell

I will!

Nicholas Crowell

I actually read some negative comments about this season when I was finishing up S5, but so far I am loving this Season! This episode alone is just incredible, let alone the horror vibes and the darker themes which I love.

Nicholas Crowell

It hits HARD. And thank you!

Nicholas Crowell

I will be checking out that video later, such excellent writing and directing in this one!

Nicholas Crowell

This is in my top ones for sure. I'd say I'm stuck between this one, "Restless", "Becoming", "Innocence", "The Body" and maybe "Doppelganglang". I want to rewatch all of them to make up my mind. ...but if forced to choose at gunpoint, I'll say for now "Restlesss". While not necessarily as emotionally impactful as some of the others, I LOVED the style and the directing captured the feeling of being in a dream better than anything else I think I've ever seen.

I've been waiting for this reaction and yours was perfect! This is my favorite episode of the series (though sometimes I go back and forth with at least 2 other episodes because this series is just so brilliant in writing, performances, thematically, and directing) but this is the episode that lives rent free in my head. I know not only every lyric but every line of dialogue. This was, to me, the musical episode that launched a multitude of musical episodes of TV. Sarah Michelle Gellar was really nervous about this episode because she's not a trained singer or just superbly talented in this arena (like Amber, Anthony, James or Emma) but I think she did a phenomenal job. Alyson begged not to sing. They all did months of vocal training. Buffy's line of "Dawn's in trouble, must be Tuesday" is hilarious because the show aired on Tuesday nights. I actually own the Once More, With Feeling Script Book that was released for this episode. It contains the original shooting script of this episode and it's one of my favorite treasures. If you ever get a chance to react to the DVD commentary of this episode, I bet it would be so fun for you and for us!

Helena Briner-Ellis

This is my favorite Buffy episode and I was so excited to see your reaction! Download the “Once more with feeling” soundtrack, you won’t be disappointed! And as stated before, definitely watch “the making of “ video on YouTube. I would go on and on about this episode but other commenters expressed my sentiments already. FYI the other producers and writers for Buffy and Angel had singing cameos; David Fury was the main guy singing about the mustard stain/dry cleaning in the group number and Marti Nixon was the singing parking ticket woman with the cop 😉 Thanks for your awesome reaction!!!

CuteLiLRN

Just looove love love this episode. Spuffy :)

Christina Gmiterko

This the episode where I realized Amber Benson has the ultimate singing voice. And is insanely fun to watch in her element. You should google Anthony Stewart Head and Amber do the rocky horror show. It's a treat.

Hans Engelen

Yes on the anxiety. LOL I'm one of those people who loves this episode and keeps waiting to come across a reactor who hates it. I understand not everyone likes it, and I even understand why some people would find it hokey or too cheesy, but it would be hard not to be bummed out.

Raven Dark

This is one of my favorite episodes of the series. I've been waiting for this one since you started the show, Nick, and you did not disappoint. I'm so glad this one didn't get spoiled on you. It's such a well-known episode and so much a part of TV history that it's difficult for people not to end up finding out about it simply through the existence of the online world. It was a joy watching you try to figure out what was happening at the start. Your expressions were priceless. For the first few minutes of the episode, before Buffy bursts into song for the first time, there are plenty of cues to tell the viewer this is a musical episode. The different tone you mentioned. The jaunty music in the opening scene. Everyone moving differently, as if to a beat. All are signals of what's coming. I am so thrilled that you didn't pick up on them, or, that if you did, you didn't realize what you were sensing. That way you were still surprised when Buffy started singing. Even her alarm clock is a cue. It's different than her normal one, and it looks like a stage prop. You may already know this, but the title, Once More With Feeling, is a phrase that's used in theater. When an actor would deliver a line that was lackluster, a director would say, "Once more, with feeling." I thought the title might spoil you if you saw it and knew what it meant before the episode started. I'm glad that didn't happen. My impression as to why the Scoobies were still singing after the Demon left is that some of the magic he used still lingered after he was gone. Like the magic had to wear off, and when he left, the effects didn't just immediately vanish all at once. They did a similar thing at the end of Superstar. After Johnathan's augmentation spell was reversed and everything went back to normal, Buffy and Riley are kissing in his room. As a final line to the episode, Buffy whispers, "Johnathan..." So this isn't the first time we've seen the effects of a spell linger. It isn't mentioned in the series itself that I've ever picked up on, but the demon's name is Sweet. A synonym of that word would be Suite, as in a musical suite. They mention his name in the commentary tracks for the ep. I thought it was hilarious when Spike said he was immune, then he was getting grouchy with Buffy, and then it's revealed that he was just trying to get rid of her before he started crowing like a rockstar. There have been plenty of shows that have done musical episodes by now, and I'm fairly certain Glee's existence owes itself at least partly to this episode of Buffy. But at the time this came out, to my knowledge, there was only one other show that did a surprise musical episode before Buffy. I won't say which show, because there is every chance you may see it in the future, and I don't want it ruined for you. The lady who sang about the parking ticket is Marti Noxon, one of the show writers. The man who sang the line, "I got the mustard out," is David Fury, another show writer. I believe Michelle Tractenberg's (Dawn's) dance number happened because she's trained in dance. Ballet, I think. This reaction was everything I hoped it would be and more. I can't wait to watch the rest of the series with you, Nick. This is why you're one of my favorite reactors.

Raven Dark

This is such a superb episode of Buffy and dare I say it one of the best episodes of TV full stop in my opinion. Nowadays musical episodes are almost expected for genre TV. It had been done before Buffy a few times, but OMWF definitely popularised the concept and I would cautiously say that since this aired no other musical episode has topped it. Buffy reactor fans tend to wait on tenderhooks for this. It's not universally loved by reactors. Some just hate musicals generally and so aren't able to appreciate OMWF (which is fine) but there tends to be a real anxiety amongst fans in the lead up to this. You liked it for all the right reasons. To do a musical, which could easily have been a throwaway gag episode, and have it drive almost every single ongoing plot and character beat forward meaningfully, plus actually do the musical well, is a remarkable achievement. They got rather lucky in the casting since so many are vocally gifted (Amber, Anthony, James) and the others with larger singing parts are at the very least 'ok'. I love that they managed to cover so many different genres of music. Rock, jazz, pop, ballads and so on. I could literally wax lyrical (pun intended) about how masterfully done this really is. You likely missed a lot of subtle BtVS in-jokes in the lyrics and through the setting which you'll pick up on a rewatch and the episode is chock-full of references to musicals of old, Disney, and other things if you know what you're looking for. Hard to name a favourite song...Under Your Spell is superb as a double entendre, not only for the sexual subtext, but also for the darkness of the song when considered in light of willows actions. The opener is similarly a bright and happy "Ariel" melody, with lyrics about depression and apathy. I could go on. But I won't. Glad you enjoyed it!

You never never desappoint me with your awesome reactions. I knew you would love this episode. I've watched it so many many times, that I was really focus on your face and expressions and I really enjoyed it a lot. As always, I totally agree with your final comments. I think we all are left thinking "Where do we go from here", after all the truth was revealed and what it would be the future consequences about everything. Can't wait for the next episode (I would love for the next reaction to be this Thursday, but we will have to wait). Thanks a lot for this. Have a really good day and see you soon. Greetings!!!

Finally, the moment so many of us have been waiting for! Not only is this a musical episode, it's THE musical episode that pretty much kicked off other shows to do their own musical episodes.
