Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix FULL Reaction

Everyone loves Dolores Umbridge, right? Right?!?!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix FULL Reaction

Comments

So you're pretty much saying his girlfriend is stupid? Geez

April Nicole

This is my favorite book and least favorite movie due to how much they cut out :( If any of the movies were going to have two parts it should have been this one. Two parts for book 7 was pretty much unnecessary and felt like a money grab

April Nicole

This is literally my favorite book and least favorite movie. Says a lot

"yes, Umbridge is bad... but who hired her?" - Why Cornelius Fudge Is The Worst, Supercarlinbrothers

Viera Galikova

Fudge really shows up how much he lives up to his name in this movie/book, especially when compared with his positions in earlier movies. He always "fudges the issue" so he take the easiest way forward. Think of how in the Prisoner of Azkaban he brushes off Harry's underage magic in blowing up his aunt, saying something like "We don't send people to Azkaban for blowing up their aunts" ... as he was worried abour Sirus. This time, however, he was prepared to institute a full trial for Harry 'cos now it was convient to him to discredit Harry. He in his own way is almost as evil as Umbridge (who also lives up to her name!)

Stephen Paynter

Some people may send you a looooong letter about it, but I’ll just say there is so much from the book that is left out of this movie.

Freida Mason

Dumbledore and Voldemort are nowhere near tied. The fight in the movie is played that way for effect I think. In the book Dumbledore practically sleepwalks through their fight, Voldemort can't even make him break a sweat. Dumbledore chooses to fight defense only because well.. you'll see later. But yeah, Dumbledore could wipe the floor with Voldy if he wanted

Fun facts/answers to some of your questions: While this is the longest book, the film is the second shortest. And before you come at me in the comments, this is all things that are not or barely mentioned in the films so these are NOT considered spoilers. Mrs. Figg, Harry's neighbour, is revealed to be a Squib, which is a non-magical person who is born with at least one magical parent (kind of the opposite of a Muggleborn). Filch is also a Squib. The revelation that Umbridge was the one who sent the dementors that attacked Harry and Dudley is cut from the film. Quidditch is entirely cut from the film. Kreacher the house-elf has a bigger part in the book. Dobby helps Harry discover the Room of Requirement, not Neville (it is also Dobby who gives Harry the Gillyweed in Goblet of Fire instead of Neville). Harry, Ron, and Hermione meet Neville's parents, who were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix, at St. Mungo's Hospital. They also see Gilderoy Lockhart who's memory is still severely damaged. The memory that Harry sees of his dad bullying Snape is longer and more detailed in the book. It's actually about Lily ending her friendship with Snape after he called her a Mudblood. So while James was still an asshole he was actually defending Lily. It's revealed that Professor Trelawney's prophecy about "The Chosen One" could have been about Neville as his birthday was also at the end of July. And Dumbledore explains the real reason Harry has to stay with the Dursleys every summer: When Lily sacrificed herself she invoked an ancient and powerful spell in which her blood serves as protection for Harry against Voldemort. Harry's blood was so essential to Voldemort's resurrection because this would finally make him immune to Harry's touch. The magical blood protection is so powerful that it even works with aunt Petunia. As Lily's sister, Petunia is her closest living blood relative, Harry is protected as long as he stays where she stays until the age of 17. Imelda Staunton doesn't get enough credit for her portrayal of Dolores Umbridge, one of the most despicable characters on film. Stephen King himself said that she was the greatest villain since Hannibal Lecter. Director David Yates described her as a splice between Doris Day and Freddy Krueger. It has also been noted by many fans, Imelda Staunton and even J. K. Rowling herself that she bears many similarities to the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Thatcher, similar to Umbridge, was minister for education, and was also known for being radical, harsh and in some cases extreme with her policies and methods in running the country. She made many changes that the public disagreed with (though ironically, she was the one to ban the cane in British schools) but she was also known for her soft approach when addressing the public. Umbridge's hairstyle even bears a resemblance to that of Thatcher. Furthermore, the power granted to Umbridge by Fudge to consolidate his political strength and squash his perceived enemies is not unlike the abuse members of the Nixon administration committed during the Watergate Era. In addition, Umbridge's final crimes are the "ethnic cleansing" of Muggle-born wizards, analogous to the Nazi persecutions leading to the Holocaust. J.K. Rowling has stated that Umbridge is LOOSELY based on a former teacher of hers. She chose the name to reflect her character. Her first name comes from the Latin word for sorrow or pain, "dolor". Umbridge is a play on "umbrage", which is offense or annoyance, and comes from the Latin word "umbra" (shade or shadow). The word usually appears in the phrase "to take umbrage". In Harry Potter, Umbridge is more hated than Voldemort. Coincidentally, she shares a lot of similarities with Voldemort. Both are blood supremacists and half-bloods who despised their own race. Both hold negative emotions for their parents. Both hold positions of power and are feared by many wizards and witches. And both left permanent scars on Harry. Fun little detail about Umbridge is that her clothing becomes darker shades of pink as she gains more and more power throughout the film. I have to say though, as a cat lover I am very offended by the portrayal of cat lovers in the book/film! Non-verbal spells are highly difficult and usually less powerful. To perform magic without saying the incantation requires serious practice, skill, concentration and discipline, which is why two of the greatest wizards, Dumbledore and Voldemort, are able to do it. Students at Hogwarts are only trained in non-verbal magic during their N.E.W.T. years (sixth and seventh years). Snape tries to teach the kids how to use it in his DADA class in the sixth book (still mad they took any of that out of the film). Harry's vision of Sirius wasn't real. It was just what Voldemort wanted him to see and to lure him to get the prophecy. Padfoot was Sirius' nickname (as he could turn himself into a dog who has soft fleshy pads on its feet) he used when he, Remus, James and Peter created the Marauders Map. It was also his nickname for the Order of the Phoenix. Harry used it to tell Snape he was in danger and WHERE, and Snape pretended not to know anything, but he DID know and he is the one who alerted the order. Harry's scream when Sirius dies is said to have been muted because it was too agonising and actually caused Helena Bonham Carter, Emma Watson and Bonnie Wright to cry. However, some people think it was simply done to add a dramatic sense of numbness to the scene. There's also a popular belief that Dan's grandmother had just died so his reaction was real. But there's no proof of that. One of his grandmothers did, however, pass away in October 2008, a year after the film was released. Dan's other grandmother was still alive in 2016, as in interviews, he said he'd hate for her to have seen his film "Imperium" which came out that year. Harry's behaviour towards Cho in the film kinda pissed me off. In the book, they actually started a relationship and breaking up was a mutual decision. Cho was not tortured by Umbridge and forced to reveal, AGAINST HER WILL, where Dumbledore's Army was practising. It was Cho's friend Marietta Edgecombe who WILLINGLY leaked information to Umbridge. Btw in the scene where Harry tells Ron and Hermione about the kiss their laughing was improvised. J.K. Rowling said that Harry wouldn't have remembered his parents' death clearly enough because of him being just a baby at the time, but, unlike in the book, in the first film he sees Quirrell die. Because of this, he should've been able to see the Thestrals from his second year, but Thestrals hadn't been mentioned in the books at the time so the filmmakers wouldn't have known about the potential continuity error. It is not mentioned in the film that Nymphadora Tonks is also related to Sirius; she is the daughter of Andromeda Tonks who is Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy's sister. Andromeda's name can be seen on the family tree in Sirius' house but her photo has been burned off. The book explains that her family disowned her for marrying Ted Tonks, a Muggle-born. Harry may have been right about the mistletoe being full of Nargles, because they are magical creatures that live in mistletoe. But no one has ever seen one and Luna is the only character known to believe in their existence. When Bellatrix takes Neville hostage in the Department of Mysteries, Helena Bonham Carter improvised and put her wand into his ear. However, she got so carried away that she damaged Matthew Lewis' eardrum and he almost lost his hearing. The only spell Neville used successfully against an enemy, Petrificus Totalus, is the same spell Hermione used on him in the first film. Beautiful note: Evanna Lynch had written a letter to J.K. Rowling about her struggles with anorexia before being cast as Luna Lovegood. If you're into some behind the scenes gossip: Emma Thompson (Trelawney) and Kenneth Branagh (Lockhart) were married but he left her for Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix), though years before. So if you've seen Love Actually then THAT moment hits you even harder. And yes, the dementors are utterly useless! 😆

I am so glad that this got uploaded! Umbridge is one of the best villains ever written because she speaks to evil's mundanity. Even Stephen King himself said that she's one of the best evil characters he's ever read. So excited to get into your reaction! Thank you for taking us on your Harry Potter Journey with you

I don't think your girlfriend, (I don't know how to spell her name, I'm sorry), will be in Ravenclaw. Rowena Ravenclaw was all about wit and intelligence. She is VERY intelligent. You, Nick, are either Griffendor or Hufflepuff.

Tymm Gwayn

I also love Luna.

Dutchkel

Luna! My favorite HP character! She's so sweet and intelligent. Her father publishes his own magazine "The Quibler", which is considered a tabloid with crazy conspiracy theories, and this contributes to people treating her like she's crazy. I think that both you and your girlfriend are Ravenclaws, although your girlfriend could be Slytherin. (Sorry, I don't know how to spell her name!)

The Dementors were convinced to join Voldemort's side, hence why the locked up Death Eaters were so easily freed. Voldemort's appearance change is explained in the 6th book, and it has to do with Dark Side corruption. In the book after Arthur is attacked, the Weasleys, Harry and Hermione visit him at the hospital a few times. There they meet up with Neville Longbottom, whose parents are in permanent care there. They were tortured to the point where their minds were literally destroyed. That's why Neville lives with his grandmother. While visiting Arthur they also see none other than Gilderoy Lockhart there, who is just as charming as ever. He also is in the care of the healers there. Mrs. Figg, who saw the attack of the Dementors, was a neighbour who was mentioned in the books a couple of times. Harry had spent quite some time at her house whenever the Dursleys were going to do something fun and didn't want to take Harry along. In the 5th book we find out she is a Squib. Squibs are children born from magical parents who don't possess any magical affinity themselves. Mr. Filch (the janitor) is also a Squib, learned in the second book, I believe. Harry's anger in the book was much more noticeable in the book, where he had several moments where he literally shouted at people. In one of the final scenes in Dumbledore's office he actually starts destroying some of Dumbledore's equipment/furniture because he's so angry at Dumbledore for keeping him in the dark, he blames Dumbledore, and of course himself, for the death of Sirius. The prophecy we see is one uttered by Trelawny (Emma Thompson). One of the few times she actually prophesised something. Voldemort learned of this prophecy and this is the reason why he wanted to kill Harry as a baby, he was afraid of what Harry might become in the future, he saw him as a rival. Coincidentally, the prophecy is about a boy who is born at the end of July. 2 boys were born that day, Harry and Neville. That's why Neville's parents were attacked. just in case. Although Voldemort believed it was Harry. Funnily this probably set the prophecy in motion.

I've read so many explanations with so much richness about the lore, world, and characters, that at this point I think I have no choice but to read the books

Nicholas Crowell

Can't go wrong!

Nicholas Crowell

I wish they had included the opening sorting hat song. There he tells the main characteristics of each house, before assigning one to the students.

Sofía Reyes

For the movie. Sometimes bookwise I waffle back and forth between this one and Prisoner of Azkaban. I can't forget my excitement reading the whole dept of mysteries section of the book though. So creative.

Dutchkel

This is definitely my favorite movie, too! I saw it in IMAX on opening night. Third Act - the audience was going crazy!! With excitement, ofc. So many life lessons, and a good movie to watch if you're feeling a little down. IMO For me, it conveys how important it is to have friends/loved ones AND allow them into your life. Especially, when you have the urge to push people away. I also love the message that we all have light and dark thoughts. Denying that those parts of our personality exist rarely leads to hugs and puppies... and, it's the choices we make that truly matter. 💙

Will3000

2nd favourite movie (&book) for me

CeNedra

Oh I can already guess! We all know what's up! And I live in Belgium, it's just my dad drank enough beer for the both of us so no thanks. As for the Voldemort look, it's because he ... Oh wait that would be a spoiler. Ask us again after the last one. It's not really addressed in the movies though. Neither is the story of Kreacher ever explained in the movies. Kinda feel bad for that. His is a sad story really. As for the nicknames. Padfoot, because he turns into a dog (Sirius), Wormtail well that is obvious as he turns into a rat (Peter Petigrew), Mooney (Lupin) because of his werewolf affliction and finally Prongs (James Potter, Harry's dad) because he could turn into a Stag. It is not explained in the movies but they were friends at school and when they found out about Lupin the others decided to turn themselves into Animagi (wizards that can turn into animals) so they could keep him company during the full moon (a werewolf is only dangerous to humans). Normally wizards have to register that they can do this but the friends never did which is how Sirius managed to escape (changed into a dog the Dementors could not detect him as easily). The map Harry got from the Twins is a map that the 4 friends made during their monthly adventures when Lupin was a wolf.

Hans Engelen

Oh, this is my fav movie out of them all! Can't wait to see this reaction I really like the themes of this movie, with the politics, and Harry's isolation!

Liam

Belgian beer, good choice :-)

Priscila

Yessss!! Let's go (I will cook later, sorry Dad) hahaha
