I agree. Robots in the Whedonverse usually show up when there are questions of consent--whether someone has a destiny (Buffy) or has undergone brainwashing or something, the robots represent the opposite of the ability to choose. A lot of people interpret the girlfriend bots through a perverse lens, but thematically they're much more complex.

2024-01-24 00:38:39 +0000 UTCThe last „Mommy?“ always gets me. The next episode is one of the many stand outs of Buffy and is part why Buffy is still imo one of the best tv-series to date. I dread this ending and the next episode everytime I rewatch Buffy.

Not in every piece of fiction but in quite a lot of them including the very first time the word was used in Karel Capek's Rossum's Universal Robots. In this episode it is pretty clear that the robot is a stand-in for manipulated, abused partners everywhere. Definitely an emotional slave.
