Jed who played the wolf in the movie was indeed a wolf hybrid. He also starred in the Disney movies White Fang and Journey of Natty Gann. The scene of him walking down the hallway at the beginning was apparently done with no direction to the Wolf and he just did it that way. :) People were also terrified of him and the only person he was friendly to on set was Richard Massur.

I actually did not know about the short story, so, thanks for mentioning it, I just downloaded the PDF!
