Riley feeling that Buffy should have turned to him for comfort when being worried about Joyce is sadly realistic. It hurts that the person you want to be there for , chooses isolation instead.

2024-01-13 18:05:00 +0000 UTCThis episode is where I first started hating Xander, tbh (on first watch, anyway - upon rewatches, the hate starts in S1 lol) . His speech to Buffy just hit all the wrong notes for me. I agree with you, at first, I was happy for it because I thought he was just making her realize she didn't really love Riley. But then as he kept talking, I realized he was just making her feel bad and like this was her fault, and I hated it. She made the right call before he intervened, imo. Good riddance to Riley and his old-fashioned gender expectations and insecurities.

2023-10-26 00:24:16 +0000 UTCTouching on the "ultimatum", I never took it as Riley blaming Buffy and saying she had to forgive him now, but rather if she ever could forgive him/if they could fix their relationship one day. I think Riley took a lot of accountability and explained his actions without excusing them and wanted to know if there was anything left between them worth staying for. I don't think Buffy loved him but I think she realised that if he stayed she could have.
