Taylor "disappeared" for a year while writing Reputation, which was her answer to the media's perception of her and the criticism she had received regarding her personal life and publicized disputes with other celebrities. She's been critised for her love life and deemed a "serial dater" (she makes fun of that in the song Blank Space from the album 1989). Also because she writes songs about her exes there was/is an ongoing joke that you have to be careful or she'll write a song about you! She's had to deal with sexist comments from reporters and body-shaming as well (which led to her developing an eating disorder).
Then there is Kanye West. I don't know if you know any of this so, to explain, it all started in 2009. 19 year old Taylor had won Best Female Video at the VMAs and was on stage making her speech when Kanye interrupted her, literally took the mic from her and said Beyoncé should have won. It was absolutely devastating for her, especially because when the audience booed at Kanye she thought they were booing at her. In spite of all that, Taylor forgave him in the song Innocent off her album Speak Now and later they even appeared to have become friends.
But in 2016 Kanye released his song Famous which included the lines "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex" and "I made that b**** famous". Kanye said he called Taylor and asked her if he could use it in the song and she agreed. But when Taylor denied having consented to the "I made that b**** famous" lyric, Kanye's then wife Kim Kardashian released a highly edited recording of the phone call between them in which Taylor appeared to have consented to it. Kim also posted a series of snake emojis which Taylor used in her music videos and the Reputation Stadium Tour (which this performance is from). Taylor was called a liar by the press and people started to turn on her. On top of that, in the music video for Famous there were naked wax figures of several celebrities and public figures, including Taylor, which she called revenge porn.
Finally in 2020, an uncut version of the call surfaced, proving that Kanye did NOT tell Taylor about the specific line where he called her a b****.
Another thing is the re-recordings. One thing you need to know is Taylor writes/co-writes ALL of her songs. She is critically acclaimed for her songwriting and her lyrics in particular. So, in 2018, Taylor signed with Republic Records after her contract with Big Machine Records was expiring. For years she tried to buy her masters, but was not given a chance unless she signed another contract that would require her to create 6 more albums under the label in exchange for the masters of the first 6, which she felt was unacceptable. In June 2019, Scooter Braun purchased Big Machine from Scott Borchetta and became the owner of the masters of her first 6 albums. This led Taylor to re-record those albums (Reputation was the last album under that label). She has re-recorded 3 albums: Fearless (Taylor's Version), Red (Taylor's Version) and Speak Now (Taylor's version). There are slight changes in some of the songs, there is the All Too Well 10 Minute Version and there are also previously unreleased songs "From The Vault". So if you're gonna react to anything from those albums I suggest Taylor's Version.
Taylor is also currently on the Eras Tour, which broke the record for most concert tickets ever sold in a single day at 2.4 million. The show is groundbreaking because she's going through all of her albums, and the concert is over 3 hours with a setlist of 44 songs.
There is a reason why Taylor is called the music industry. She's experimented with practially all the genres, she is a clever businesswoman, is heavily involved in not just the writing but the production of her music, an activist, and in spite of her fame and success she is still so humble and grounded.
If you want to get to know more about Taylor as a person as well as an artist I suggest Miss Americana on Netflix. The Reputation Stadium Tour in full is also on Netflix. Then there's the Folklore Long Pond Studio Sessions on Disney+. As for songs there are too many to choose from! As for albums I suggest either continuing with Reputation or starting with Speak Now TV, Red TV or Folklore and Evermore. As for live performances I suggest 2019 American Music Awards, Love Story at the Fearless Tour/Speak Now World Tour, Haunted at the Speak Now World Tour, Dear John at the Speak Now World Tour, Long Live at the Speak Now World Tour, Mean at the Grammy's 2012, All Too Well at the Grammy's 2013, All Too Well 10 Minute Version on SNL, I Knew You Were Trouble at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2013, Blank Space at the Grammy Museum (acoustic), Out Of The Woods at the 1989 World Tour, Betty at the ACM Awards 2020 (acoustic) and Cardigan/August/Willow at the Grammy's 2021 just to name a few. And since you're watching Friends you might enjoy Taylor and Lisa Kudrow singing Smelly Cat at the 1989 World Tour!
