Buffy 3x12 FULL Reaction

Oh Giles, how could you... This episode was tough to watch, but such a strong one!  Seeing Buffy deal with (and outsmart) a truly terrifying vampire was so satisfying and a great way to put the protagonist in a new challenging scenario.  Also...does anyone else want the Watcher's Council to fight an army of vampires on the frontlines?  Maybe firing them would be enough haha

this is tough because - imagine a slayer in 12th century. Practically a property of bunch of men - the watchers. No friends, no good relationship with her mother. And 18th birthday? what a lie. that birthday didn't mean anything for any culture in the past thousands of years. It was just an excuse to kill or traumatize Buffy, because she is becoming independent as a 90s woman. A slayer in 16th century would depend on them completely.

The actor that played the vampire was a regular on the old TV show China Beach. Excellent actor. Jeff Kober. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0462116/

I think you’re spot on about the strength of the writing of this show is being willing to show the characters we love have real flaws, make bad choices, and disappointment us. Not only is it more like real life and relatable, but it makes us root for them even more when they learn and grow. I read an interview with Joss Whedon years ago and he commented about this. How it’s so much more satisfying and interesting to have heroes with real flaws. Perfect heroes are boring. And likewise he mentioned the same about villains. How many writers make the mistake of making their villains too one-dimensional in their evil. Just as boring. A villain who surprises the audience by doing something good or has some positive traits is just so much more interesting (cough cough, Spike, cough cough). I can’t remember his exact words, but to paraphrase it, he said something like this: in real life, sometimes the person you love the most can let you down, while the person you hate/your enemy can do something surprisingly nice or good. Real people are interesting because they are complex and that’s what amplifies our feelings about them (both positive and negative), so when fictional characters are written that way too, likewise. One of the many a reasons us Buffyverse fans are so passionate about these shows. Welcome to the club! Oh, and also welcome to the “The Watchers’ Council Sucks” Club. 23 years and still going strong ! 😉👍
