The Shawshank Redemption FULL Reaction

Comments

The book is a collection of novellas called "Different Seasons," and this is the first story, "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." The collection also contains "The Body," which is the basis of the movie "Stand By Me." They are both examples of times that great movies actually improved on stories that were already really good; they miss some of the nuances of the situations, but by scene-ing out Shawshank (and still keeping Red's internal monologue, often word-for-word), they made the characters even more relatable, and in Stand By Me, I almost feel like the movie was a final edit, in which they realized who the story was actually about... King himself thought he was writing a story about one of the characters and wrote the ending to feature that character, but admitted later that he realized the character it was really about was the one the movie focused on. It happens on rare occasions! I mean, writers often don't know what the story is until they hear someone else tell it back, but movie changes are all too often more in the "It'll look cooler that way!" variety instead of something as well thought-through as these two. ETA: I do recommend the books, though. "The Body" has some very stunning passages about writing, and love, and nightmares and fate that the movie didn't have time to get into (and they would have felt weird). And you'll get why there's a long hanging shot of a deer. And it's very interesting exactly how much of "Shawshank" made it into the movie. When the ads first came on, people who hadn't read the book wouldn't have immediately thought "Ah, Stephen King." But the first line of the first commercial for the movie was verbatim, and I recognized it immediately. ("Whoa, it's that Rita Hayworth story from Different Seasons, can't wait!")

Yeah no worries at all, I wanted to watch this one again and figured I'd do a commentary, but I know a lot of people just prefer first time watches

I was excited but considering it is not your first time, i'm not interested. Not flaming you or anything, just sayin' :)
