Buffy 2x1 FULL Reaction

***volume is a little loud on this one*** Sooo happy to share a second Buffy reaction with you this week... and wow. What a way to start off the new season. I did NOT expect that at all...
very old episode but i'm going back and rewatching your whole series on this (i'm really enjoying so far so thank you:) ) but i think the reason that the master was so careless is because in the past slayers are completely isolated other than their watchers, he didn't even consider the possibility of people who know enough about her situation to help. and the only person he knew she had on her side was angel and it's not like he could give her cpr

I love how this shows how Buffy views the other characters (in this angry, PTSD version of herself). Angel - she is angry at him, wants to fight him, because he is a vampire - literally one of the people who are the reason she has to do this 'job' in the first place. Giles - she is angry at him because he is the one she sees as forcing her to go out and confront the vampires. So, she essentially blames them for her 'death'. Xander and Willow - it's more like they are bystanders. She uses them to hurt Angel, they are in the way, 'civilians', and she wants them away from the danger because she now knows how real it is. Her parents - she is distant from them because they aren't even part of that side of her life. Cordelia? Well, she sure insults her but she also rushes off to save her. We've already seen that part of her wants Cordelia's life in 1x11 so she's angry she can't have it. But Cordelia is also the catalyst that spurs her into action.

Which technically means, in the school dream, that David Boreanaz was dressed up as the Master who was dressed up as Giles. I would love to see BTS photos of the Master in tweed :D

Fun fact: Mark Metcalf was not available to play the Master in this episode, so every scene in which he appears is David Boreanaz in the make up.

Love this episode, love this reaction. Seeing Sean Lennon in Cibo Matto in the Bronze stage is always such a bonus too!!

By the way Thor, I also didn't get some of the references when Xander and Willow were playing that game at the beginning, but the one where Willow had ice-cream on her nose, the film was "Witness (1985)" - Definitely go and check out the trailer. It has Harrison Ford...I've never seen it but it honestly looks cool! I love the vibe of old films haha

I absolutely adore this season premiere. I think it's SUCH a strong episode. But that's mostly because I'm a glutton for punishment and always enjoy how emotional this show can get. When "Sugar Water" starts and that beat drops as soon as Buffy steps into The Bronze *always* gives me chills to the point that I start to tear up haha
Sarah Michelle Gellar kills it this episode. Her performance is so subtle yet depicted perfectly. Her facial acting gets a really big highlight in this premiere and she seriously shows off her acting chops here.
Also love that this has become a Cordelia Fan Club channel haha. I fucking love her. Truly just one of my favorite characters possibly ever. Top 10 at the very least. I feel like there are two kinds of Buffy viewers and that's people who loved her straight away and people who absolutely hated her at first but have start to like having her around by about this point.
Either way, loved your reaction, Thor. Was *really* looking forward to seeing it for this episode. It's definitely my favorite episode of the show so far, no contest

I love this show for not skipping over the fallout of choices and bad situations. It makes it more real

This show is so smart in how, we all know we are going to die eventually...ESPECIALLY being a slayer. But most of us never really have to deal with that while so young so of course it is traumatizing. I'm glad they showed it.

This was just a wonderful episode and a fantastic reaction! To me, this episode epitomizes the core of what Buffy as a show is all about. As others have mentioned, diving right into PTSD is something few shows have the courage to do let alone in the first episode of their first full length season. They don't shy away from difficult topics and I think that's also why those of us who are diehard fans are here on Patreon, watching reactions for episodes that are older than 20 years.
I remember watching this episode when it first aired and I was only 11 at the time but it made such an impression on me. Maybe it was SMG's stunning acting but the way it was portrayed I totally understood her acting out due to being haunted by awful nightmares and feeling isolated.
After all, she is The Slayer - one girl in all the world. So, she tried to put the world on her back and do it all. But the end of the episode taught her a very important lesson that in order to survive and even thrive as a Slayer (also as a burgeoning adult), you need ties to the world - Willow, Giles, Xander, Angel.
Just fantastic!

I love how brave it was to open the season with the heroine in a bad psychological place and behaving badly to all the people we care about. The actual psychic follow-through on what happened to her was refreshing... no reset button here. What happened happened, and it changed things permanently.

When I got the email that Thor posted another Buffy reaction, I immediately rushed to my iPad to watch. 2 episodes in 1 day is the best surprise ever!
Season 2 here we go! My personal favourite tied with Season 3.
I really like this episode because I appreciated the fact that a new season didn’t mean they started fresh which they could have done. Buffy never shies away from the dark & uncomfortable. It does deal with the traumatic aftermath of the Season 1 finale. I mean Buffy died. That is A LOT to deal with especially for a teenage girl who has to still be the slayer and keep putting her life on the line, knowing she could die again.
But I adored how everyone in her life knew it wasn’t the real her & forgave her for what she said & did.
I cannot wait for more Season 2 reactions. Honestly I wish Thor did one every day 😂

I feel spoiled with a holiday weekend of TWO Buffy episodes!!! You picked right up on the trauma aspects of what Buffy was going through and her trying to push everyone away. I also like the scene we get to see a peak at her parents and their relationship with each other and with Buffy.

Just watched this and I LOVED it. It was so great seeing you so engaged with all the emotional beats. I had fuzzy vibes the whole time cause it was so exciting to see the show kicking it up a notch.
- The best part of the episode for me is how the show once again deals with stories in a very human way. Buffy is a hero but she still technically died. What she went through was traumatic and I love that the show chose to follow up with that instead of forgetting it ever happened. I liked how we saw how Buffy’s way of “coping” affected her parents and her friends and once again SMG killing it with her acting. She committed to very shade of emotion whether it was loneliness, fear, sadness or anger. SMG adds so much depth to her portrayal of Buffy that even when she was lashing out, I just wanted to give her a hug. And I could feel your empathy for Buffy throughout as well and it nice that you picked up on her pain straight away.
- I also like that whenever Buffy’s in trouble you think of Angel and then he turns up! haha - I personally really love their interactions. Out of everyone I feel he’s the one who can really understand her feeling of isolation the most.
- I have to say that scene at the Bronze was so, so good. SMG was totally channeling Kathryn (Cruel Intentions) haha. The fact that she can sell the “bad girl” vibe as well as the raw vulnerability we got at the end really amazes me. By the way the band on stage are legit - It’s Cibo Matto performing “Sugar Water.” That one is on my playlist, it’s SO cool haha
- That ending “this is just too nice” and then we cut to the Anointed one. You’re learning… 😂😂
Anyway, thanks again for the extra Buffy episode, this made my day! :)
