Others have pointed out how awesome it is that you're shocked, but not surprised, by the movie's climax. And that's De Palma's genius. We all know, going into the movie, that it's a horror; but De Palma uses so many techniques to lull us into a sort of daze: from the hazy focus and chilling beauty of the opening scene, to the highly camp (and iconic) soundtrack accompanying the girls' detention workout, to the comedically sped-up tuxedo scene. And then the colourfully/softly-lit prom setting itself, sentimentally scored and dazzlingly filmed (indeed, Carrie and Tommy's dance is deliberately dizzying). Every part of the prom up to that dance is colourful and sentimental and very typical of the soft-focus 1970s. And it's highly effective: despite us knowing what's to come, we get swept along by the magic of Carrie's one perfect night. The film almost dares us to wish it would end there. But we know it won't, and it doesn't. And that, to this day, is what makes it so powerfully horrifying. It's an incredibly artistic representation of how a perfect moment or one's wildest dreams can turn instantly into our worst. The more fantastical elements aside, that makes this story incredibly relatable to real life, even today.

2021-10-09 01:29:54 +0000 UTCGood point, although Sue had good intentions, I think that the wisdom of her plan to help Carrie left a lot to be desired (to be fair she was a naïve high school girl herself, and credit for at least trying). However, I think Sue's role in the film can serve as a poignant metaphor to society's/ parents'/ schools' failure to save a broken or damaged or violent child... even with the best intentions. When it comes to mental damage and abuse, too often we are ill-equipped to save, and it's a tragedy that affects so many, like the tragedy in the movie.

It's been a little while since I've read IT, so if that wins the vote I may have to re-read just to refresh myself 😅 Kings works can be pretty dense (alot), so it's difficult to recall everything. I remember The Stand being a struggle to get through at times. It was great, but a struggle. Lol

I agree with the great portrayal of cruelty in this movie, it's brutally accurate and doesn't sugarcoat anything. And I do like your point about indifference, although there were characters who tried to help Carrie... only, it was too little too late. But I thought that added a nice touch, and opens the conversation open societal intervention with damaged/ bullied/ isolated kids. To what degree can good people help? And are parents the ultimate influence? And is cruelty more powerful than kindness (in scarring and marking a child)? I don't know exactly, but to me the fact that people tried to help Carrie made the tragedy that much more powerful

First book starts the series off slow, but then it's a roller-coaster of a ride for the next 6 books! Well, 7 if you include Wind Through The Key hole.

I loved the movie so much at the same time I was scared af about the people!! As a bullied kid I resonate a lot with the portrait of cruelty. I didn't know that Stephen King was a teacher when he wrote it but that actually has a lot of sense!! He is so good at creating bullies and makes you believe that violent justice is well deserved. This movie is heartbreaking but so well done! It has this row reality and shows how indifference is a big part in discrimination.

I've also read several of his short stories, some of which were excellent. And I've read his book On Writing which was phenomenal. But I haven't seen the series, I'd be interested how they adapted the novel

It’s less horror and more sci-fi thriller? Ish? And there’s a short series for it that came out in 2016 with 8 episodes that I really liked as well.
