The huntress is alarmed enough by her condition to accept the invitation and follow the strange woman into the tent. Inside, the “wild” wolf watches quietly as the huntress is helped to bed.
“Feel feverish?” The woman asks.
The huntress nods in affirmation. “And my heart won’t stop racing,” she adds, “Have I been stung?”
“Maybe, though that’s not what’s causing the reaction. The pollen from the Feverfaux thicket dilates blood vessels, quickens the heart, and increases circulation. It comes on with a feverish flush for some, but it passes in a short while.”
The woman motions for the huntress to recline and pours a glass of water from a pitcher.
“You’re an alchemist?” the huntress asks.
“Of sorts.” The woman answers. “What I create with that pollen is very important to some people in high places. Now rest while I find where this beast has hidden what he stole from you.”
The huntress’s gaze lowers to meet with that of the wolf’s.
“Will he attack?” she asks.
“No, love.” The alchemist answers, “He minds me. Usually.”
