We want your help!

It’s time we invest in a high powered desktop CPU (or whatever you call it)! Everyone at Patreon knows I (Tom) don’t know anything about computers, but we need the best and we are willing to invest so we can have the best content and livestreams for you!

What I’m asking is advice from any computer savvy people who know the SPECS we need to have when we purchase this new CPU. I don’t know anything about RAM, GB, memory, graphics or anything else….but…I want you to offer your suggestions of all the details and specs we need to have the best system around.

So let us know in the comments, and THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING you do to make our Patreon amazing!😊🙏

Years ago when I first started building my own PCs I would look at dozens and dozens of reviews of each of several individual components, comparisons, data analysis and tests, and the combinations of different things and how it would affect components. I knew zilch about hardware and software, but I sure learned doing all that research and reading, back then websites of the golden era of the internet were a plethora of helpful guides and reservoir of knowledge. Now, everything has turned "corporate," the wild west of the internet has seen its heyday. Now you should turn to Youtube reviewers for hardware and PC information. I recommend Hardware Unboxed, Paul's Hardware, JayzTwoCents and especially Gamers Nexus. I recommend watching The WAN show from Linus Tech Tips. I am sure missing many many helpful channels. But all of that is for the nitty gritty of PC hardware and tech. For more immediate and to the point and concise help for a PC build, I STRONGLY recommend just going to and reading Tech Spots 2025 PC Buying Guide, which gets updated as it goes and as tech comes out. They recommend you the parts to build their The High-End Gaming Machine ( * High-end performance * Heavy multitasking * Hardcore gaming) and their The Growable Workstation (* Workstation-like performance * Extreme multitasking * Hardcore gaming) Putting it together can be much less daunting by just looking up a Youtube vid about the particular part you are dealing with. I am sure there must be similar guides elsewhere. https://www.techspot.com/article/2989-pc-buying-guide-2025/

I would recommend the mid range tier! Budget Tier, Mid-Range Tier, High-End Tier CPU AMD Ryzen 5 5600X (6 cores/12 threads, 3.7GHz base) or Intel Core i5-12600K AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D (8 cores/16 threads, 4.2GHz base) or Intel Core i7-14700K AMD Ryzen 9 9950X (16 cores/32 threads, 4.3GHz base) or Intel Core i9-14900K Handles encoding, reactions, and multitasking. More cores reduce dropped frames during long streams. Ryzen edges out for value in 2025. GPU NVIDIA GTX 1660 Super (6GB VRAM) or AMD RX 6600 NVIDIA RTX 4070 (12GB VRAM) or AMD RX 7800 XT NVIDIA RTX 5080 (16GB VRAM) or AMD RX 8900 XTX Essential for hardware encoding (NVENC/AMF) to keep streams smooth without taxing CPU. NVIDIA leads for streaming efficiency. RAM 16GB DDR4-3200 (2x8GB) 32GB DDR5-6000 (2x16GB) 64GB DDR5-6400 (2x32GB) Multitasking with OBS, browser, and overlays. 32GB prevents stuttering in 1080p reactions. Storage 500GB NVMe SSD (e.g., Samsung 970 EVO) + 1TB HDD 1TB NVMe SSD (e.g., WD Black SN850X) + 2TB HDD 2TB NVMe SSD (e.g., Samsung 990 Pro) + 4TB HDD Fast SSD for OS/OBS; HDD for recording episodes. SSD speeds up boot and scene switches. Motherboard B550 (AMD) or B660 (Intel) X670 (AMD) or Z790 (Intel) X870 (AMD) or Z890 (Intel) Supports CPU/RAM; add Wi-Fi if needed. PSU 650W 80+ Bronze (e.g., Corsair CX650M) 750W 80+ Gold (e.g., EVGA SuperNOVA) 850W 80+ Gold (e.g., Seasonic Focus) Reliable power for GPU spikes during encoding. Case/Cooling Mid-tower with good airflow (e.g., Fractal Design Meshify C) + stock cooler Same + AIO liquid cooler (e.g., NZXT Kraken 240mm) High-airflow case + 360mm AIO Keeps temps low during 2-3 hour streams to avoid throttling. Example Builds & Performance NotesBudget Build: ~$1,000 total. Handles 720p/60fps reactions reliably; upgrade RAM if lag occurs. Great for beginners testing Patreon streams. Mid-Range Build: ~$1,800. Ideal for 1080p/60fps TV reactions with zero dropped frames. The Ryzen 7 + RTX 4070 combo excels in OBS benchmarks for 2025. High-End Build: ~$3,000+. Future-proofs for 4K reactions or dual-PC setups (one for gaming/shows, one for encoding).

Nobody

Someone who doesn't know anything about computers isn't going to be building one from scratch.

Well, the first good thing to know would be what kind of budget are we talking about, 1k, 2k, 3k? Also what else are you planning on doing with the computer, purely productivity or is there also some gaming planned in the mix? A good start would be the AM5 platform from Amd, paired with a ryzen 9 9950x or 9950x3d if gaming is on the horizon, that would be perfect for rendering. 64 gb or ram with atleast 6000 Mhz, and a rtx5070ti as a gpu. should set you up for pretty much anything that comes your way. Building the machine yourself usually safes you around 300 bucks or more, compared to buying prebuild.

I can send you a few links to PCs that should work for you

Crystal Behe

Me too James! That would be a memorable experience 😊🙏

Man all I gotta say if Nick hasn't put together a computer before I wish I was there. White gloves and all to assemble the machine that would power RT. mmmmm the joy

Since you watch a lot of tv shows and movies perhaps you'd wanna check out a OLED monitor or a mini led monitor that supports dolby vision, they'll make your shows look very nice. If you go the OLED route try to use dimmer lighting as they don't typically get very bright. I also know qd-oleds handle light better than OLED.

Get yourself a Amd Ryzen CPUs My current ram on my computer is 48 gb

Just like with most, for you and non tech salvy folk alike, a nice prebuilt with decent warrant would be the best beg. I recommend checking out LTT’s (Linus Tech Tips’) most current secret shopper video series (or at least the final) to get a good idea of the different pc prebuilt brands and their offerings/warranty

Honestly you dont need anything too crazy for what you do but i really think you should get a desktop prebuilt pc. It will be way better than your mac. This is a good one here on amazon, more high end for what you do but it will last you a very long time. Its 1300$ and its a good price for what you get. The graphics card is is very fast and will help alot for streaming and video editing. Same with the CPU, the i7 is pretty decently fast and will make everything run more smoothly. Ram at 16gb is good, dont need anymore then that. You also have 1tb of storage which is double of what you have. If you want you can even add more internal storage which is not hard to do. Or you can get an external drive. Also you will need to buy a monitor separately, at least a 60hz or 120hz one. They are about 100$ to 150$. Check out the pc here on amazon. Hope this helps! (I know it says its for gaming but you dont need to use it for that..) https://a.co/d/hsOI08r
