He was basically like the first Gale Beteker (Will he put through school so they can study chemistry for the purpose of making meth) but I imagine back then when he was more innocent he probably was more involved/friendly and less businesslike as he was with Gale.

It gives them a lot of information about the victim. Which in theory would lead t a motive. Obviously the clues from his story are lies. But they are still clues an investigation would appreciate, him looking to do a "investment opportunity" and trying to contact wealthy contacts.
