Sprite Sheets on EZ Street!

Hello -- today's release is something unusual-- but very useful.

This is a tool that I started to make for my own use, and then shortly realized how useful it could be for patrons. So I spent all weekend following through with the idea and now we have a new toy to play with. 😁

What is it?

This is a tool for quickly rearranging and exporting spritesheets and tilesets.

It will be particularly useful for tasks such as rearranging animation strips into RPGMaker formats, or for adding loose tiles into existing tilesets (from my patreon tile add-ons, for example).

It's intended to be simple and straightforward to use without being bogged down by unnecessary image-editing features.

How to Use

Load a source image (spritesheet or tileset), and set up the width and height to match the layout. You can then select tiles and place them onto the canvas grid. The canvas can be blank or you can import an existing image.

Important: The tool will expect that the source and canvas have the same cell-sizes.

Note: It's designed to work with the 100%-sized original files. Therefore, it includes export options for the 2X and 3X scales so that you can export files that will work at the RPGMaker scale (2X for VX/Ace and 3X for MV/MZ).

Reminder: if your browser doesn't want to download a zip, copypaste the URL directly.

------

Note that I just put it together this weekend and there'll probably be plenty of weird bugs or issues. Consider this a beta release and if you have feedback and suggestions-- by all means please share in the comments.

------

Disclosure: I used an AI copilot to help with programming. The design, logic, structure and layout are my own-- I wrote it mostly in pseudocode and then used AI assistance to translate that into functional programming syntax. This is an ethical use of AI as a time-saver for my own labor-- and knowing that AI is a controversial subject to many artists, I've included this note for the sake of transparency.

------

If you were expecting the Castles and Catacombs beta today-- my bad, I know I promised it.

It's actually the reason that I started working on this tool-- because rearranging the tiles was such a time sink-- I decided that the time had come to make something like this.

Now that I spent this weekend in a mad rush creating this tool, my tileset arrangement and exporting process should be significantly more streamlined, and I expect to be back on track for next week.

Thanks!

thanks! multiple source images is a good call but idk how hard it'd be to add, structurally. The bug's useful, it shouldn't work that way so I'll have to take a look. erasing with right click is a good call. iirc now it clears your selected tiles but idk if it erases if your hand is empty, good suggestion. no plans for undo/redo, that's beyond the scope I think.

Pretty useful. I think it would be pretty useful to be able to load multiple source images, then have them selectable in tabs on the left side of the screen, so that it's quick and easy to combine tiles from multiple tilesets into a single tileset. I just encountered a bug where I changed an existing tile in a tileset, but instead of replacing it, it just layered it over the top (so both images in the same tile). I'm guessing it's not intended to be used to overwrite tiles? If not, there's another suggestion. How about RMB to erase a tile from the canvas? Is undo feasible? Just a few ideas for you.

This should be useful. I was actually just dreading to organize my files and this should help lol.

I just want to sincerely thank you for the amazing work you did with the Sprite Sheet! It turned out absolutely perfect and exceeded all my expectations. The attention to detail, the smoothness of the animations, and the overall quality will add so much to the project. You really nailed it! I honestly think this Sprite Sheet could be incredibly useful to many people, especially in RPG Maker projects. It’s versatile enough to work in a wide range of games, and I’d highly recommend you consider selling it. It could help a lot of creators and would be a valuable resource for anyone working with pixel art. Your contribution is so vital in making this project special, and I’m truly grateful to have you on this journey with me. I’m excited to see your work in the game, and I’m sure the players will love it! Thank you again for being such an important part of this creation. If there’s anything I can help with or if you need anything else, just let me know.

Oh, this is AWESOME! I was doing this manually in Gimp before, but this looks like it will make the process SOO much easier. Great work!!

Stephen
