Proto-TF Terrain Tiles

Hello! Here's an interesting one!

Past couple weeks, I've been looking at the various Time Fantasy terrains and cliffs and thinking about how I might organize and standardize them into a master set-- mostly because of this idea for the World of Time Fantasy thing that I can't get out of my mind.

When I was going through my old TF stuff to try and gather everything together, I came across this old tileset. It was made for a friend's RPG Maker project that never went anywhere (RIP Kilim)-- but these tiles were an early bite at the SNES-inspired style that would become the basis for the Time Fantasy series. I think that some of these patterns eventually found their ways into some of my pack releases!

According to the data, this file was last modified in 2014. Because 2024 just wrapped up; it was kinda mind-blowing to realize that this thing was now more than ten years old. And you know what-- for being a decade-old tileset, they're not as bad as I might have expected! 😝

So, especially since we just turned over into the new year, I wanted to share these tiles with you today as a fun way to look at how far this series has come-- and how much farther we can go in the future.

I hope that you can find some use for these tiles. Maybe you can make the game that my friend never did.

I'll be back next week with something new. See you on Monday, likely from the request thread.

Thanks!

No problem, since this project never went anywhere and it's been so long, use these however just like anything else I've released. The colors... idk. Don't remember what I was doing at the time. But I do have a VERY OLD tutorial on picking colors-- this one is still a few years older than these tiles, but I was likely thinking about this stuff at the time: https://finalbossblues.com/thinking-in-color/ These days I'm a lot less restrictive about colors than I was back then-- I also don't think about building color palettes anymore: these days I'm usually working in an established style so I just colorpick directly within the existing assets. If I'm looking for a color, I basically have two palettes that I've built up over the years: "hi-bit" stuff which really has no restrictions (I've released this before), and the super-selective "lo-bit" palette which I haven't had to add colors to in a long time. Hope that makes sense :P Thanks

Really like this Proto-TF style! I can see it as more SNES since TF reminds me of Gameboy Advance more (the lighter outline and more pastel tone?). Now I’m curious about a similar tutorial to get these kinds of colors. They’re just perfect. Unless you feel like you’re disrespecting your friend’s wishes.
