Monster Monday 5: Wasp Attack!
Added 2024-07-02 15:59:01 +0000 UTCHello, I'm back with another monster sprite for you today!

So today's monster is more of a mini-monster release. Because Monday was yesterday and we had the request thread... I almost skipped this week, so I could put a little more time into a more complex monster for next week instead.
In the end, I decided to throw together a quick one for today, just because I didn't want to leave you hanging!

(The wing animation in-game is very fast and it's a different FPS than the gif, so they look kinda weird here...)
One thing that I want to do with this monster series is to remaster some older patreon monsters and include them in the final release. One of these monsters is the Giant Wasp, which I originally made back in 2018 as a regular patron post.
I thought that this would be a really simple one-- because behavior-wise, it'd just be a faster version of the bat. The idea was to have a weak enemy that would swarm the player.
So I went ahead and made a remastered version of that sprite so we could have a new enemy. But then, when I put it into the game...

Aaah! That's a bit too big! It looks more like a boss or mini-boss! Definitely not a swarm enemy!
So I quickly made a smaller variant of this sprite, and that's the one that you see in the other swarm gif above. For a better quality recording, you can see me fight a swarm of wasps in this webm.
So today's release will include both of these sprites: the giant wasp and the smaller ones. Both of them only have the one basic animation-- because the intent was for these to be really basic enemies.
The sheet has two variants-- there's an alternate animation where I deleted the white from the wings. The idea is to emphasize the blurriness of the wings when they're in motion: the trick is to make sure that they animate very quickly in-game. You can use whichever version works best for your project.

So-- like I said earlier, this was meant to be a smaller release for the Summer of Monsters, between last week and next week, which will be more substantial.
You can think of today's wasps as a preview to show that the full set will include some fun remasters of enemies that I've previously made on Patreon in the past years.

I'll be back later in the week with something new, maybe from the new request thread. See you then.
Thanks!
