Phonetics 19 & 20 Updated / Upcoming Content

Good afternoon Patrons!

I just wanted to let everyone know that episode 19 (the non-heiban conjugations of heiban verbs) and episode 20 (atamadaka verbs)—as well as episode 18, as mentioned yesterday—have been updated to include high-quality native recordings.

As many of you most likely noticed, I also did a live-stream earlier today, which can be accessed here. The next live-stream will on Saturday, November 7, from 4:00 PM (Japanese time).

The next major updates for Japanese Phonetics will be completely new versions of the various episodes on い-adjectives, as though the information in all these lessons is correct, there are now many multiple correct pronunciations of these kinds of words, and I wanted to cover this in a non-confusing way, with of course the addition of high-quality native recordings. I'm aiming to release the first of these new lessons mid-November.

As many of you may have also seen in a post I put up yesterday, before the next phonetics lesson is out, I'll also be releasing a deck of ANKI flash cards with native recordings of minimal pairs such as haNAga and haNAGA such that learners can further supplement their studies.

I hope that everyone is excited for these updates! One additional note—in revising many of the earlier lessons and adding recordings and word definitions (many of the original earlier lessons didn't include English translations) I've noticed that there are some minor discrepancies in the way that I've written translations. For example, at times I've used commas to list multiple meanings, and in other instances I've used semi-colons. Because of the way the lessons are structured, I don't think these discrepancies will ever cause confusion, but it's something I noticed so I wanted to briefly address it here. I'll do my best to use a unified set of symbols going forward to such that everything is clearer.

That's all for now! As usual, if anyone has any questions with regards to this post feel free to leave a comment below! Hope that you all have a wonderful weekend, thank you for your support, and I'll talk to you again soon.

Best from Beppu,

Dōgen
