Episode 15: Pitch accent for the 'sa' form of na-adjectives

Comments

Hi Kusterdu! Excellent catch! I recently changed the graphic to reflect the more traditional pronunciation that I talk about in the lesson 12 remake, but it seems that I forgot to update the recording as well. That said, I've actually learned that for the さ form in particular, the traditional pronunciation is more mainstream and 'correct', (which I talk about the newer version of lesson 12 out either tomorrow or the next day), so what I've done is updated (updating now) the above lesson with the original 'traditional pronunciation (Umasa)' graphic to match my pronunciation. Thanks again for pointing this out, and sorry for the confusion. If you have any questions about this feel free to let me know!

Dogen

Hi Dogen! It's around 4:52 in the video. I could be wrong, but your pronunciation sounded to me like the traditional pronunciation, while the graphic shows the contemporary pronunciation with the accent on the "ま" Thanks!

kusterdu

Hi Kusterdu! Do you mind telling me about where I said it in the video? I most likely did say it this way, as that is the traditional pronunciation of the さ form of downstep い adjectives, as I will be talking about in detail in the upcoming lesson 12 remake (due out in less than a week). Please note that I also talk about the traditional pronunciation of the さ form of downstep い adjectives in the post for the most recent lesson 12 remake, which I decided to take offline as until the newer, more comprehensive version is out. If you have any questions let me know. Cheers!

When you said うまさ, it sounded like you were putting the accent on the う rather than the ま. Am I imagining that?

Hard to say without going into a long discussion on why there are i-adjectives and na-adjectives to begin with! Thank you for your support!

HI, thank you for the lessons. I know it's not phonetics but now I can't help but wonder why is there a difference in usage of the sa form between I and na adjectives…

Isabel Sáenz

Hi Walt. Both are correct, but it is my understanding that 匂い is more neutral while 臭い usually indicates a foul odor.

Dogen

Hi. I know this is not a kanji course, but just for the record, which should be the correct kanji for the word におい? 匂い or 臭い?

Walt Poor

Hi Chase. There are unique rules for sentence final particles, which I intend on covering in the upcoming advanced pitch-accent lessons. If you'd like to learn more now they are listed in the 新明解日本語アクセント辞典! Apologies for the delay!

Dogen

I'm wondering what the difference between this さ and the sentence final particle さ? Are there any good rules for sentence final particles like よ、ね、なあ、かな, etc.?

Chase Dahl

Hi Helder. Interesting question. I've actually asked several different native speakers and they all gave me different answers, as 十分さ comes up so rarely in conversation that speakers will simply fall back on their own personal, instincts, rather than memory. Most native speakers will frown initially, as it's similar to asking a native English speaker the correct pronunciation of 'enoughness'. Does this answer your question? Thank you for the support!

Dogen

Out of curiosity, do Japanese people know how to pronounce words like 十分さ properly? (as it is not a common word). Or do they often pronounce it the wrong way when trying to say it?

Helder Servio

Video is still up ^^

Dogen

Nailed it!

Dogen

It's short, but it was "enoughness"
