No Flag Northern Ireland

Comments

Not to try and make this look like a youtube comments section, but... I think it would have been useful (and not that wander-off-the-pathy) to mention that, even using the term Ulster (of which Northern Ireland is about a 2/3rds subset), let alone its flag, to represent Northern Ireland, is pretty broken.

I'm from Northern Ireland and I didn't even know some of this stuff. I'd be surprised if more than 20% of the population knew what the red hand is supposed to signify. I'd never heard that story in my life until now. My parents are direct descendants of two of the the families named on screen at that part of the video and I still hadn't heard the story of the hand. βœ‹

Start a the "Wikipedia article of the day" and then click on every 3rd link until you have a video.

Very enjoyable! But I feel watching this is like banging my head against the wall of The Needle. No worries, camels walk wobbly anyway.

2 deliberate misspellings at 0:48 on newspaper? I understand the brand name, but why misspell Belfast?

... is this a 'No Love Deep Web' reference? :D

I love the stories of 'official' flags within the UK. We should never forget that the first 'official' Welsh flag was this monster in 1953 - https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/g/gb-w1953.gif

St Patrick's Saltire may have been taken from the coat of arms of the Geraldines (FitzGerald), an Anglo-Norman/Hiberno-Norman family. I think its exact origin is disputed (especially as Ireland was represented by a harp until the eighteenth century), but using it for the Union Jack makes sense visually rather than trying to add the Red Hand or making the background yellow.

I've always been confused about how St Patrick's cross fits into the mix, anyone know?

Now I want to watch a video of Grey getting lost in the forest of all knowledge, where he just meanders from topic to related topic explaining things.

Talk about tackling a controversial topic πŸ˜‰

Hah, I really liked how this was put together. When discussing anything about Northern Ireland it's incredibly easy to get pulled off to complicated tangents. Well done.
