Lindsey Sterling posted something Justin related on Instagram today: https://www.instagram.com/p/C8ulXpHv9NP/?hl=en
It demonstrates what I long suspected: Justin has become a surrogate punching bag for every shitty ex every woman has ever had. He was THE crush for millennial women and the embodiment of their dream man. Now that he's been revealed to be a bit of douche he's the embodiment of a lifetime of disappointment. Going off what I have seen, I would say women who are still single are much more likely to be on the Justin hate train because they have more frustration to take out on him (I say this after flipping through Instagram and trying to find someone who is married and that I remembered hating on Justin so take with a grain of salt).
At this point its almost like the Nickleback hate train. It's less about what they did and more people just enjoy hating on them.

This is like Ringo Starr making an album of standards sentimental journey for his mom. No one had less range to croon standards than ringo starr. And no one is more country inauthentic than Justin Timberlake. A carpetbagger trying to use country as a stepping stone to a career comeback. He thought the dumb redneck trailer trash would be too stupid to know the difference. I hope Mrs starkey and grandpa Timberlake enjoyed these albums because no one else did. Btw ringo was a talented drummer and a much nicer person than payola wannabe Justin Timberlake

Justin reach the peak of his mediocre career at a very fallow time in popular music. When there just wasn’t a lot to listen to on mainstream radio. It was like choosing between foreigner and reo speedwagon and disco. Once the internet democratized music and new talent was accessible, people tuned out the payola wannabes like Justin Timberlake

Yeah todd's definition of "hit" is usually more about longevity. You can still hear Mirrors in any department store in America (and occasionally some other 20/20 Experience tracks, s/o That Girl) but I do not recall ever hearing Suit & Tie in the wild.

The unspoken point of this episode, and why Justin came up with this radical and insane concept and then quarter-assed it, seems to be that he's kind of a shallow dumbass with limited range as an artist. The very notion that he inspired Tennessee Whiskey's rise somehow, or even took anything from it, reeks of trying to insert himself into a trend. He also must just surround himself with yes-men because the single choices, the outfits, the humor, the weird dropped computer glitch storyline feel like they all exist because of sheer impulse and weren't thought about for a second.
And I think Justin being lame alone wouldn't have killed his career--his Lonely Island sketches work so well because they present him as goofy and a little dumb, and if Justin could've committed to self-deprecating in his thirties or at least bringing a little levity to the cool-guy bit (a la Silk Sonic), I think something *like* this could've worked. He is such a talent in physicality and face-acting that stuff like him singing in a black jacket and red boots, or the whole Cracker Barrel scene in the Man of the Woods video, still really work for me. It's just really depressing that he went hard on the worst parts of his vision instead, only to immediately drop them when they didn't work. And from his recent album drop it sounds kinda like it happened again.

Great video Todd! I can't imagine it's easy to make a video that your entire fanbase has been clamoring for but I think this absolutely lives up to expectations.
It's so weird listening to FutureSex/LoveSounds now given what ended up happening to Justin. He's so effortlessly cool on all of those hits that I still feel as if he is the guy bringing sexy back. And now he's just... impossibly lame.
Someone brought up Robin Thicke above and I think there are definitely comparisons to be made between Paula and this album. The main one being that both albums are concept albums that really half-ass their concepts and yet still have some good songs despite it. The difference being that the good songs on Paula all fit together and you can make a decent EP out of them with a certain theme. With this one you really can't. Which begs the question "Is Paula better than Man of the Woods?" Did a coked-out, overworked Robin Thicke who didn't collaborate with anyone super notable make a better album than a very rested, clearly inspired Justin Timberlake who was working with a ton of hot behind-the-scenes guys? It's a weird question but I think the answer is yes.

from what I understand Nelly Furtado's pop explosion around 2006 wasn't something she was super enthusiastic about and she purposefully got away from the spotlight afterwards. It's like she tried out being a pop superstar and decided it wasn't for her. The other two I absolutely agree with being subjects for future videos.

some of his films were alright while others(Southland Tales)were disasters(though that movie being a rancid piece of shit was hardly his fault).
Some people liked that Nelly album.
What "secret fallout"? I heard she just stepped away from the band so she could focus on being a mom. Though given how fucking bad those last two Black Eyed Peas albums were I can't say I blame her for bailing.

to be honest, i don't think most teenage girls are interested in that anymore, or at least not as much as they used to be, which is the real death blow to that category. it seems like the average teenage/preteen girl is most interested in guys that seem sweet and unintimidating; more like the one direction boys as opposed to JT. i don't think 'cool' is really the best way to appeal to them anymore. and that's not even just for music, either.
(for the record, i don't mean any of this in a judgmental way; honestly, i'd rather young girls be interested in guys that are nice, because i'm sure they'll be better off for it)

Commenting this before watching the video, but I might have an explanation for why Justin made this album.
This is from an interview from a long time ago and I don't feel like trying to dig it up right now, but apparently, he said that when he was a kid, he promised his grandfather that when he became a recording artist, he would do a country album.
I'm guessing that this is that album.
I kinda have a feeling that Justin's grandpa would not be a fan lol

It's honestly such a shame that Justin Timberlake wasted the momentum he had after FutureSex/LoveSounds. That album cemented him as a Main Pop Boy. Next to Usher, JT was probably THE male pop star of the 2000s. And as much as his reputation has soured over the years and as much as we find his whole schtick corny now, his music was really good. FutureSex/LoveSounds had banger after banger, and his musical partnership with Timbaland is so strong that they still work together to this day.
So it always confused me that after a huge success like that, instead of releasing a followup, he decided to go act in shitty movies for the next seven years. Even when he came back in 2013, while he got some big hits out of it, it just wasn't the same. Too much time had passed.
Strangely, Justin Timberlake wasn't the only pop star who had a huge breakout success in 2006 suddenly decide to step away from the spotlight. Gwen Stefani, Fergie, and Nelly Furtado all decided to step away from their pop stardom at the peak of their careers at around the same time for all varying reasons.
Speaking of which, we need Trainwreckord episodes about those three artists: No Doubt's comeback album in 2012, Nelly Furtado's comeback album in 2012 that I remember nobody liking, and finally... Fergie's Double Dutchess. From the development hell that album went through, to the drawn out and shaky rollout, to her secret fallout with The Black Eyed Peas, to everything that happened during that era (like her infamous National Anthem performance) — it's all a story worth recounting in this series. Especially since we basically have not heard a peep from Fergie since.

wrt Say Something, you're spot-on with the boneheaded logic of releasing what is basically an endorsement of centrism at the exact time that every public figure of note was being called upon to speak out
also given the timing of the single and album releasing lining up almost exactly with the Super Bowl, the Janet connection is obvious. But I think you're being too generous saying this is about him being unable to tell his side of the story - It's him saying he has nothing to explain or apologize for, as evidenced by him saying "I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to absolutely fucking nobody" on the 20th anniversary of Nipplegate this year
also the "Just Girly Things" bit is god-tier

I think as a culture we might just be getting rid of "Lover Boy" pop stars. Guys who trade their whole image on being a cool ladies' man. It's corny as best, and creepy as worst.
It's not even exclusive to white artists. Look at R. Kelly, or how perceptions on Drake are swiftly changing.
Bruno Mars is many things, but he's never based his image around being a Loverboy-type. At least Prince kept things light by peppering his sex jams with his quirky sense of humor.

I mean, it's not like Justin chose to be lame and tryhard; no one has ever tried to be lame and tryhard. Lame and tryhard is the failure state of trying to look cool, and it's a really interesting question what makes someone cool and someone else lame. Justin was absolutely cool for a very long time, and then he suddenly wasn't and I'm sure it was as much of a surprise to him as to anyone else.
Personally, the thought experiment of what would make Adele look lame is an interesting one. You're right that sticking with her "sound" has insulated her from a lot of risks.

This album has never ceased to confuse me. Even having just watched a near-forty minute video explaining its history and reception, with short dives into a few of its songs, I still don’t entirely get what Timberlake and his collaborators were trying to do here. Like cashing in on the popularity of country music makes a certain amount of sense, but it sort of defeats the purpose when nobody is committing to the bit – when all you have is more of the same pop flashiness in a flannel shirt.
And the thing is, I don’t think that Justin Timberlake taking a more “rustic” approach HAD to fail. When the album title and cover art were revealed, I assumed this was going to be Timberlake’s Bon Iver album. Justin Vernon has always exuded a certain rural Midwest hippie vibe even with all the synthesizers and avant-garde shit in his music. I couldn’t see Timberlake doing anything as raw as Vernon’s first album or electronically fragmented as his last few…but I could 100% see him doing a more polished and commercial version of Bon Iver’s 2011 album, and I don’t know that it would have been GOOD, but it would have made more sense than this.
Also, a few years before Man of the Woods dropped, City and Color released If I Should Go Before You – a pretty excellent blue-eyed soul revival album. And while Dallas Green has a lot more substance and range as a vocalist than Timberlake, I still think that something like this would have been a better canvas for his voice, at least if he really wanted to break away from writing conventional pop songs. Overall, it’s not the quality of the music on Man of the Woods that bothers me, so much as the inflexibility of its concept and execution. Going a more “flannel soul” approach would have played to Timberlake’s wheelhouse better than trying to get that Chris Stapleton money.
Thanks for the retirement video, Todd. Glad to fund your four week soccer hiatus.

Revival does have it's fans though so it's simply inaccurate to say nobody defends it, perhaps in your corner but not everywhere. Rap Critic did a pretty good defense of it on the Goin Off podcast and it did pretty well commercially so I definitely wouldn't say it's a flop like Man in the Woods, unlike JT Em still has a very loyal and die-hard fanbase and his songs still do big numbers, like you can bitch about Houdini all you want but it did extremely well on streaming.
Anyone describing Revival as one of the worst albums ever hasn't listened to truly awful dreck like say AJR.

My 'theory' behind it is that he felt the need to make up for the 7 year gap between 20/20 and Futuresex so he churned out a B Sides album to make fans happy.
And then unfortunately it had the opposite effect and it was one of his worst albums. It kinda makes me sad because I feel like Pt. 2 makes people take the first part less seriously and I think that's unfair since Pt. 1 is just some of the best 2010s pop out there.

Adele chose to stay in her lane and just ride it out. She'll be fine, even if she stops touring. I'm pretty sure her life is nowhere near as messy as several pop stars, so I think she's set for the rest of her life.

Some stray thoughts of mine I didn't see mentioned here: JT's (slightly lower) peaks from 2013-14 were concurrent with another rapid rise and fall of another white R&B crooner: Robin Thicke. Can't help but wonder if some of the conversations surrounding "Blurred Lines" started sowing the seeds for the backlash against Justin.

For the record, every time you say that Witness or Man of the Woods was the biggest flop of that era, I never agree, it always comes back to Revival for me. Maybe those other albums did worse in terms of numbers, I haven't looked into it, but what I know is that I can't think of a single album in my lifetime that's as widely and unanimously reviled as Revival. Its release broke the music side of the internet for several days. Even most hardcore Eminem fans don't defend it. And it's not just that people think it's bad, people almost universally describe it as some of the most obviously, indefensibly, intensely bad music they've ever heard. Eminem still kept having hits after that album (his career seems to be a bit of an unkillable cockroach), but I feel like it permanently turned his reputation negative; he's synonymous at this point with dated, edgy humor and corny jokes.
So what I'm saying is, there's the next Big One to cover.

also, for the record, there's another huge hitmaker that hates touring and takes eons between new albums. her name is adele. i actually saw adele on tour, and 1) she was great, and 2) she even said while she was there (in a lighthearted snarky british humor way, not in a whiny way) that she doesn't like touring and it'll be a long time before she comes back.
the second you talked about justin hating touring, it got me wondering why the response between justin and adele is so different. because adele built up tons of anticipation too, and is also one of the more respected pop artists, like justin used to be.
honestly, people get on adele for her songs being "too similar to each other", but i think sticking to her brand was a very smart move. even though her songs are about her messy emotions, adele still has a lot of poise and dignity, and i think that's what keeps her cool and respected. justin timberlake being lame and tryhard is a death blow for him, and it would be very bad if adele did that, too. i guess adele realizes that and justin did not lol
(i mean, adele's music has also pretty consistently been really good, so that helps too, but plenty of artists do well with music that sucks, so i don't think that's the only factor)

Another brilliant video. Interesting to think about how much pop music changed across the 2010s. I don’t think Royals gets as much credit as it should for being its generation’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. Like there are differences, especially in terms of the speed of the change it provoked. But I would love to see Todd repurpose the Nirvana Killed My Career graphic as Lorde Killed My Career.

NKOTB-Face the Music. A misguided attempt at the boy-band superstars going from teeny-boppers to New Jack Swing bad boys, it flopped so hard one of their members quit before the tour even started and they found themselves playing to half empty clubs.

He was a member of a HUGE boy-band in the 2000s called N'Sync(who reunited to do a song for one of those Trollz movies)and he later left the band for a succesful solo career, he performed in the 2004 super bowl with Janet Jackson and him taking off a piece of her top revealing her nipple-covered breast sent a furor over the airwaves with the FCC getting WAY more strict about network TV(gone were the days of side-boob shots in NYPB Blue and the use of the word "shit" on any network TV show, some blame Nipplegate on that show being cancelled, it also sadly prevented "The Shield" from dropping an F-bomb in season three like originally planned)and with soap operas as well. That incident also kinda led to Youtube being formed as one guy was upset about how hard it was to find video on the incident so he went to work on forming a video sharing site as as a result, so thanks for indirectly helping create Youtube JT.

I do want to say one thing positive about JT:
The first half of the 20/20 Experience is some of the best pop to come out of the 2010s, it's a shame he couldn't follow it up with something better since the Pt. 2 album was mediocre.

At 6:14. you state how the 20/20 Experience had "only two songs...arguably only one song...was a huge hit...", and I'm assuming you're saying "Mirrors" was that song since it's playing as you state this (personally, that's the "huge hit" I fondly remember, too, so if you're arguing it in terms of longevity and legacy, sure), but "Suit and Tie" did reach some pretty big highs, too, off of being the first single. Think you're slightly underselling that a bit.

Error watch:
5:38 - jump cut error?
12:40- did you mean to have this not on a matte? Not sure if this is an error tbh
I have been waiting for this Trainwreckord since I first found your channel and it was all worth it for the perfect timing of the Trollz clip. I had to pause the video I was laughing so hard.
19:21 - quote on video, not matte layer. Another one where I'm not sure if it's an error
34:10: BIG ERROR You're missing the final statement of the video entirely. It cuts off in the middle of a sentence straight to the Nebula ad.

Is it just me or does none of this music sound remotely like country? Going in I thought it would just be Filthy that didn't, but no... Also I didn't like Mirrors and thought it (and Not A Bad Thing) was as childish and backpedal-y as Can't Stop The Feeling so I guess my verdict (going in) was the same as yours with Witness and Prism: it was 20/20 Experience that really killed his career; we just had to wait.

Future Trainwreckords?
- Wilson Phillips "Shadows and Light" - They conquered the world with their debut album, then lost everything and broke up after the failure of their follow up album. It was NOT just a sophomore slump.
- Taylor Dayne "Soul Dancing" - For the first time, Taylor Dayne wanted to write, or at least co-write, some of the songs. It didn't go well.
- Christina Aguilera "Bionic"
- En Vogue "Masterpiece Theatre"
- Debbie Gibson "Body, Mind, Soul"
- Bethany Cosentino "Natural Disaster"

in general, i agree...but also, the pickings in the pop world for that are slim, so i'd be willing to at least give it a chance. i mean, i think i'm far from the only gay out there who has wasted too much time listening to a mediocre man drone on about nothing because he's rugged and attractive

2024-06-22 01:02:04 +0000 UTC
but actually on the topic of the album. the funniest part of justin's 'man of the woods' thing tanking so incredibly hard is that cottagecore became such a huge thing like 1 year later, and taylor swift struck gold with it in 2020. maybe justin timberlake would've done better if he'd released it during pandemic year lol
(also, as a simple gay, i am SO beyond willing to eat up a lumberjack pop star. bummer that it went the way it did. my hot take is that justin timberlake actually does look kinda hot in flannel. he should've made an actual rugged country boy album, because at the very least some of the gays would be able to project their lumberjack fantasies onto it.)

But I wanted to tell you this. I found out about you from a recommendation for your Somerton video back in December.
And I’m glad I did. I was suffering from severe depression in last year and this year. I started watching all your videos and my god I needed it. I still watch your Cinemadonna videos. I still need to start a band called Porcelain Pimp Slap.
Whatever you decide to do, thank you for what you did. Thank you for what you’ve created. You were a life-line when I needed one.

I've been keeping up an ultimate "Worst Lines of Trainwreckords" list that includes such examples as "peñius colada", "modren man", and most recently, Faith Hill trying to sound like Madonna on Justify My Love with "like you're touching the wings of a butterfly". If you are reading this, have the time, have watched this new episode, and think you know what the worst line of lyrics from the covered album is that is in this episode, I would appreciate leaving a reply with your opinion. I want to get an accurate consensus.
