Sneak Peek: Wed April 17, 2024

Man, two weeks feels like an eternity between uploading videos to YouTube! But a video essay on my visit to Long Beach, California is coming today. Honestly, a very strange and interesting city. Maybe a bit maddening.

Overall schedule update -- this was a tough past couple of weeks, since I hadn't been back from Long Beach for much time before I turned back around and traveled for eight more days, doing multiple events in Portland and Minneapolis. I find it very unpleasant to try to do more than one thing at the same time -- I'm an unrepentant mono-tasker! -- so I really focused on experiencing those two cities, meeting people, and shooting footage for upcoming videos that will cover aspects of the two cities that I haven't covered previously. I should be back on weekly YouTube releases now until maybe early June, when I have more back-to-back travel (Central Oregon and North Carolina).

And for the Nebula folks, my intention is to ramp back up to releasing there a full week ahead, but that isn't feasible this week because of...everything I just talked about. New video likely on Saturday or Sunday, though!

Today's question, SLIGHTLY related to today's video: cruise ships, yea or nay? I've never been on a cruise, but it has occurred to me to go on one just so I can make an on-location video about the simulated urbanism of cruises. Anyway, have you ever been on one? Are you a fan? Pros/cons? SHOULD I GO???

Comments

I recommend that you do a video on cruise ships and their adverse effects on the economy of the ports of call.

It's taken me this long to comment. I'm from LB and my dad's side of the family arrived in 1939. The thumbnail of Curly's and the oil pump is part of my history. It only of the oldest places left. I had my celebratory meal there as part of my long-distance cross country training flight from Palo Alto to LGB in the early 2000s. Not far from Curly's was one of my grandfathers bar/restaurants The Gay Ninety's on Signal Hill which closed in 1971. His more well known place was The Leilani Hut which occupied the space where Legend's now stands on 2nd street in Belmont Shore. In 1947 he constructed the first floating Christmas Tree in the Naples lagoon which is still a tradition to this day. So many memories over the last 50+ years of people and places long gone now. My parents rode the last PE train from LB to LA in 1961 and my dad and grandfather rode one of the first Blue Line trains in the 1980s when downtown LB was renewing itself. Now the city hall building which was erected in 1977 has just been demolished for a new City Hall plaza -- the days wandering downtown as a kid...now those places are gone already. There are gems to find around LB and I hope they figure it out as it could be a great walk-able and bike-able city.
