ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "Bust a Move" by Young MC

Comments

Once again, Todd, you made me like a song I already liked just a bit more. Thanks.

Rish Outfield

I believe this one is the Shatner cover

Jen

Hey Todd. Could you tell us who the performs the cover in the credits? You make some great choices but they are so hard to track down.

This was the era I definitely knew hip-hop had arrived--when I could hear rap songs like this on *Canadian* Top 40 radio and not just MuchMusic or Children's Television Workshop programs (the Fat Boys were semi-regulars on 3-2-1 CONTACT).

Joe G

The only time I've ever heard of this song is in the episode of Scrubs Landon mentioned above. I'm a Brit though, so maybe it didn't do much over here. (Goes and checks - yeah, it got to 73 in the UK chart. Also, he was born in London!). Oddly though, 'Keep it in Your Pants' sounded a bit familiar.

Steve Harper

But that wasn't actually Young MC, Old Young MC was played by Leon Simmons.

I have no memory of this song. Which is weird because I definitely remember listening to Wild Thing when I was like 8 and playing basketball at my neighbor's house. I think we played it so much because it was so dirty. ...Somebody probably should have been supervising us.

Goddamn I love Flea.

Still waiting for Paper Planes by MIA

Also, this is far from the only weird thing Flea has been in. He was Needles in Back to the Future Part II that same year, and he later voiced Donnie Thornberry. His IMDB profile has 86 acting credits as of today. He's clearly pretty savvy with his connections, though unlike Lil Dicky, he's genuinely talented as both an actor and musician.

Jacqueline Sailer

Yeah that's when Tone Loc went into acting with films like Surf Ninjas and Blank Check.

RedBedroomRecords

OHWs that focus on these old stone-cold classics are some of my favorite videos from Todd.

ArthurCrane

Heard this song in a bunch of movies- See Spot Run, Max Keeble's Big Move, Uncle Buck, etc.

RedBedroomRecords

There was also the cameo in Scrubs as Old Young MC when JD and Turk was at a medical conference and JD runs into his baby mama who had lied to him about not being pregnant anymore, and he was there as well and all Old Young MC could say to people was โ€œBust a Moveโ€

Landon Miracle

"Funky Cole Madena" hasn't aged well at all. It's basically about slipping girls a mickie

You know, it makes enough sense why Young MC couldn't carve a career for himself in the '90s, but Tone Lลc surprisingly did even worse that decade. After being such a pioneer for hardcore rap and a literal Crip, you'd think he'd breeze through the Death Row era, but his second album in 1991 was such a flop that it didn't even chart on the Billboard 200. Probably because he tried to be a ladies' man all of a sudden. You should definitely consider that one for Trainwreckords someday.

Jacqueline Sailer

Honestly, that 1997 song of his that you showed sounds more like "Return of the Mack" than "1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin' New)".

You didn't mention his most bizarre song, where he raps about people putting fake pictures on their MySpace profiles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9ONI6PjPcQ I can't think of any other song that has aged so poorly.

Roland Rabien

Excellent intro, both the song and this video. I have to dance when this song comes on, I'm so glad you did this one!

Deanna Banana

The only reason I'm slightly familiar with the follow up single "Principal's Office" is because it was once featured on Beavis and Butthead.

New Lindsay Ellis video, new Philosophy Tube, and a new One Hit Wonderland. It's like Christmas came a month late!

Oh Todd, Tone Loc wasn't the original popularizer of "Hasta la Vista, baby". He took it from Jody Watley's 1987 grammy nominated monster hit "Looking For A New Love".

I was born in '91 and can definitely say this track has followed me around my entire life. It's kind of like "C'mon and Ride It." Which I never hear anyone mention, but I had them on the exact same random cassette tape my mom used to play in the car because she was a cool mom ๐Ÿ˜Ž
