ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "I Love College" by Asher Roth

Comments

Thank you for jumping on this grenade for the past ten years! Your insight and point of view is appreciated.

Question, any reason you have never done a video on Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, cover of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." That would be an interesting video.

10 years? Holy crap, I must have found you 6 or 7 years ago

Stephanie Martin

In college now and I always put this on at my least sociable, like when I'm studying or procrastinating in my room. It's a broad pastiche of college parties at best, and you wouldn't want to play that kind of thing in any social situation, but it's still fun to bounce to. Roth seems like a genuinely solid rapper and it doesn't really matter that he never sold the cool guy vibe, because those guys are often total dicks. His one-hit-wonder story kind of makes I Love College look better, because it's almost like a nerdy kid at a party (like, me) trying to fit in by being as wild and "like the rest" as he can. There's a charm to it.

Happy ten years!

Happy anniversary, Todd 🎂 I've been watching since 2011 and I'm happy to support you here 😊 This was definitely a unique song for me, though. I graduated class of 2009 and still expected college to be exactly like this. And then I went... To a Christian college. It was not like this song 😂 But I did go to a Blink 182 concert that year and he was the opener and the crowd was not... welcoming to him

Happy Anniversary! Been watching since around 2010 -- can't remember the first video I watched (my earliest favorite has been of all things Mike Posner's "Cooler Than Me"), but I've watched most everything you've posted. As a sap for pop songs even when they **are** bad, I love the dedication and attention to detail you give to each review. Favorite One Hit Wonderland, btw -- Cameo's "Word Up" :) Looking forward to being a Patron for many more years!!

(End shot) Talk about suffering for your art....

Hey Todd, just wanted to thank you for helping me expand my music horizons. I do not think it is a coincidence that after I started watching your show way back in middle school (also holy shit I've been watching you since middle school and now I've graduated college) I started to give other genres besides rock a chance. Happy to see you still putting out great content after all these years.

Thank you Todd so much for 10 years of your very hard work! It's been a real pleasure to see you grow and evolve over the course of your career, and it's always so gratifying to watch you bring so many disparate elements together into a cohesive and compelling narrative. Whatever the future holds for you, know that you have my undying admiration and respect. <3

On the same boat! I got *in* college in 2009. I remember partying to a lot of Flo Rida, Black Eyed Peas, LMFAO and Pitbull, but never heard of the Asher Roth song.

I feel almost guilty that I only discovered your channel 4+ years ago, but you’ve consistently been my favorite YouTuber since then. You’ve gotten me super interested in nearly all aspects of music, fame and media. (Even resumed learning about singing / music theory cause of you!) Thank you for all the laughter and the insights; you’re awesome!!! (Also, if you’re looking for an OHW hit that came out while you were on YouTube, I’d recommend ‘Broken Hearted’ by Karmin, which you mentioned hating in 2012. The ‘band’ dissolved, so definitely a one hit wonder. Lol) (Also, also, this song you reviewed just now sounds like the frat boy version of ‘Young Wild and Free’ by Snoop dog)

Franco del Rosario

There was even a study done that showed people liked musically-simpler songs in difficult times.

Jon Heiman

I've been there since your beginning on the Site We Don't Talk About. That said, I was a few years out of college when this song hit. I've never even heard *of* it, let alone heard it.

Jon Heiman

Congrats

Raymond

I first found your channel in my first year of college, actually - in 2010 - so this video is doubly nostalgic. Your videos have been a constant and a bright spot for me through many many many changes in my life in the past decade. Thank you very much for working so hard and sharing your creativity.

S. R.

Been a hell of a 10 years my man.

Josh Spicer

Happy anniversary! Been watching since Wrecking Ball.

Samu Tolvanen

Appreciated his shoutout to Mac Miller as well. R.I.P.

I also have to mention, I charted this out on guitar for Rocksmith 2014 (Unofficial DLC, mind you) and the guitar in there actually has some pretty nice soloing to it. Really chill and fun to play. Not to mention you can easily play the rhythm part with a capo and it just becomes a perfectly chill song to play.

Nero Bron

I remember literally learning about this song in late elementary school. I loved this song and honestly still do, although I do acknowledge the flaws. I was waiting for this one to come out some day and, lo and behold, you got it and for a 10th year, too. Been watching you for a long time, and here's to another decade or hopefully more of the man in the shadows, Todd!

Nero Bron

I'm learning so much about condoms right now.

Happy Toddiversary, Todd! Here's to ten more years!

I've been watching your videos on and off for the last couple of years, but have only really been watching them religiously for the last few months. You're always entertaining and informative, you've introduced me to a lot of artists, albums and songs I didn't know (or didn't know enough) about, and I loved your past crossovers with Alison Pregler and Lindsay Ellis. Keep up the great work, man.

i love u todd “in the” shadows been watching since the alien ant farm review

Congrats, Todd! No joke, I've been watching since your Black and Yellow review all those years ago. It's been amazing watching you evolve and grow with the times and I've been a loyal watcher ever since I first started watching. Always excited to see what you do, thanks for everything man.

Christian Reiswig

Congratulations on 10 years! You are a sharp, funny, and interesting reviewer, and I like going back and looking at your older reviews on YouTube. I look forward to seeing where you take us in 10 more years!

Jennifer Layton

Congratulations on 10 years!!! Been a fan almost all of them, and grateful for everything you've done. Even gave a shout-out to you in the dedication page of my forthcoming baseball history book, as thanks for the laughter and company your vids provided during the book's long, long development process.

MPG1989

Suburban Philly you say? I'm a suburban Philly guy myself! Let's see what school he went to... Pennsbury. And WEST CHESTER U. Boy, that explains a lot. EDIT: To clarify, Pennsbury is one of the more affluent suburban schools in the area, secluded in the pines near the Delaware River, and full of the richest white folk in the area. West Chester is a notorious party school in another affluent suburb. Lil Dicky has more street cred just from being from Cheltenham.

Terrence Kuhns

Ouch. We're now getting into songs I remember personally. Congrats on 10 years! I've been watching since the TGWTG days and I'm grateful for the consistently quality entertainment and criticism!

Max Eliaser

I totally believe that every single take you did of the budweiser shot was genuine

Rick Griffin

i can't believe you've been making these videos for ten years and i can't believe i've been watching for almost as long. i was in jr. high school, holy shit

this was a pleasant surprise! i recognized you've tweeted about this song before. great job as always. i'll always be thankful for tgwtg (lol) because if i hadn't explored that site, i wouldn't have started watching in 2009! and now i'm 23, and nobody likes you when you're 23. congrats on 10 years and to a prosperous future!

Saffron C

I discovered your videos in fall of 2012 during one of the lowest points of my life, and in the years since I've had a lot of really bad days where watching a few of your videos have made me feel better. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Peter Theriot

"Time's not wasted when you're wasted." On the contrary, that's exactly the greatest waste of time.

Josh Liller

Happy 10 years Todd!! You've done some great work and I hope you continue to keep making content!

Happy 10 years! So excited for everything you have on the way in the coming several years! <3

Jacqueline Sailer

Congratulations on 10 years!

Alina

Here's to 10 more! I started watching some time around when you reviewed Grenade, good times. Been enjoying your vids ever since.

Gemini Man

I remember this song when it came out. I was working my ass off my senior year of high school, trying to get into a good college myself, and I think I was mildly angry at this song for representing college as being about fun and not about learning. (I was also, as you can imagine, a real pretentious bore at the time.) I remember discovering your videos only a year or so later. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!

protondonor

dude ten years, that's crazy! I'm glad you're here, you're making good shit. Keep making good shit!

matt

Happy Anniversary! I appreciate everything you've do.

Love that you mentioned Das racist.

Landon Miracle

Congratulations on 10 years Todd! We love you! Here's to 10 more!

Author Samantha Renee

congrats! man, I've been watching your videos from the beginning, how time flies. Always excited to see new stuff, and i've rewatched all your videos multiple times. their really funny and informative, Thanks for everything

Happy 10 year anniversary Todd! I’ve only been watching for over 2 of those years but you’ve quickly have become my favorite music reviewer on YouTube! Your musical knowledge and reviewing style has really influenced me in how I think about music! And your videos, especially One Hit Wonderland, have taught me a lot about music history and artists that I wouldn’t have known or thought about otherwise. Here’s to 10 more years of reviews!

Happy Ten Years Todd! Been a fan since 2013. Keep up the good work!

Christian Samples

Happy ten years Todd!!! <3

Punky+Bruiser

You should have also mentioned about the Great Recession’s impact on the party/club boom in pop music around the late 2000s/early 2010s in how most young people wanted to forget about all the financial troubles and party their lives away

It's incredible that you've made it ten years, Todd!! I think I've been a viewer for nine of them and I appreciate the work you've done so much!

Joe Bush

To think, one of my request choices last year was Untouched by the Veronicas. Guess he wanted to wait a bit before covering someone whose hit was during the show.

Teddy Haines

happy anniversary

Happy 10th!

waywardlaser

Happy 10 yr anniversary! Happy to have been watching for 8 of them 😄🎉

Natalie Koppen

Here's to ten more!

Donovan C

Happy Anniversary, Todd!

Allison

I’m so excited! Literally have been hoping for this one since I found this series.

Paul

god i remember everyone talking about how college rap was the wave of the future at the time. more innocent days!

Shiny Skunk

Between this, "Laffy Taffy", and "Ridin'", it feels kinda weird to see the artists behind songs I remember being called one-hit-wonders. But I guess that's just the passage of time.

Owen W

Why, Todd?

Ethan Michael Thomas

Holy shit this song. Fun fact I thought Asher Roth was saying "I love winning" instead of "I love women" in the chorus.
