Whoa I never thought of that but you're probably right. I don't think it necessarily even comes down to the algorithm though, I think the nature of streaming has just made music more of a commodity. The standard these days is to just let an endless automated playlist run as you do other stuff, so forgettable music that creates a cool atmosphere gets a lot of plays and challenging or obnoxious stuff is more likely to get skipped. Back when everyone listened to the radio that skip meant totally changing radio stations but now you can skip the outlier and get right back to the bland stuff.

You know, with Issues being in your dishonorable mentions, I have to say: you know how last year you pointed out how artists like Halsey, Daya, and Alessia Cara were essentially ripping off Lorde’s style with their own music? Yea, it’s pretty bad when this year, Issues, a song by yet ANOTHER Lorde-wannabe, has a bigger hit song than the REAL Lorde did this year!

About that algorithms thing: I have a hypothesis that streaming has made music more bland. Before, radio stations had to fight for your attention to get you to stay on the station and this is why so much of the bad music was obnoxious in, say, 2010. Now people just have streaming services plop music in front of them. I'm betting the algorithm measures for seconds listened to and just as long as the song serves as white noise why goofing around on Facebook, people won't hit skip and it goes up in the ranking.

Taylor Swift got 2.5 mentions, including #1 and #2. And that about summarizes her this year. 25% seems kinda small when you think about it

I gotta say, this is the most fun I've had watching one of your worst lists in years. While I enjoyed those of previous years, it felt like they were chores for you to make, and that did come across in the videos. But this was one was just a delight.
