ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "Rock Me Amadeus" by Falco

AMADEUS AMADEUS. AMADEUS. AMADEUS AMADEUS. OH OH OH AMADEUS.

ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "Rock Me Amadeus" by Falco

Comments

Idea for another foreign-language One Hit Wonderland where the artist remained popular in their home country (and met a horribly tragic end): Kyū Sakamoto’s “Sukiyaki (Ue wo Muite Arukō)” from 1961/1963. Your “Like A G6” review way back when briefly mentioned it.

I actually ended up digging into his discography and i kind of love Falco now

Adam Nelson

For Austria it's usually a mix of either "Out of the Dark" or "Vienna Calling". A lot of radio stations here also have an hour just for Falco on his birthday.

Rukario

"Vienna Calling" reminds me of ELO's "Calling America" and Kraftwerk's "The Telephone Call" for some reason. A theory worth pursuing. In fact, maybe Falco was like a one-man Viennese Kraftwerk. No objection.

Todd, whatever I'm paying you for these episodes . . . it ain't enough. One Hit Wonderland is always the highpoint of my day.

Rish Outfield

Actually the song "Out of the dark" from the album by the same name was released before Falco died. The album was released three weeks after his death so it was already finished when he died. Today out of all Falco songs "Out of the dark" get's the most airplay on German radio stations. (I don't know about Austria.)

I must say, I never would've guessed Jeanny is from the same guy who did Rock Me Amadeus. Here in Belgium I actually hear Jeanny more often than I ever did Rock Me Amadeus nowadays.

As an Austrian, Falco was definitely never a One Hit Wonder to me. But I can see how other would think so. I'll also say that Rock Me Amadeus is one my least favourite Falco songs and I'm a big Falco fan.

So, when you were discussing the remixes, I was waiting to hear a little about that strange deadpan recitation of dates and events in Mozart's life. When did that come in, and who did it?

Jason Schneiderman

It's funny that you refer to "Ghostbusters" as a unique one-of-a-kind song when it was famously plagiarised from a Huey Lewis song, "I Want A New Drug". Doubly ironic, the title "Ghostbusters" wasn't even original either.

James

YESS! I've been waiting for this review ever since your first One Hit Wonderland!

Is there supposed to be a translation over the 'Vienna Calling' segment?

Alan Kase

I'm an odd sucker for german pop music, but this song never struck a cord with me that much. Still a very good video, nice job :)

I was really hoping to hear 'Rock Me Jerry Lewis' at the end. In any case, fine video! I salute you Mr. Intheshadows.

Gene Younkin

FUUUUUUUUUCK.

Todd in the Shadows

Uhh...the german version of 99 Luftbaloons did chart in the US? It went to number 2. The english one didn't even chart in America
