Since forever? It has a sequence of stress and a rhythm that this song lifts and even references it by using the word Rover.

sugarfrosted

Since when did Red Rover have a tune?

I have to wonder. Are you the one kid who actually liked the kids game associated with that rhyme? You didn't even mention it. Did you even know it was a thing?

sugarfrosted

Fuck this song for sampling Red Rover AKA the most annoying kids rhyme.

sugarfrosted

Also, who would have been a better choice for the male part for this song? I feel like Sam Smith could have been a better choice. Since he does sound more emotive when he's given other people's work.

Good song. I personally prefer Roses. But I do like this song even though it gets stuck in my head. And when that happens, I consider calling my psychiatrist to up my Zoloft dosage.

Yvette

^^A Mountain Goats reference in a comment about the Chainsmokers, never thought i'd see the day.

The extreme specificity of the references to the roommate's mattress from Boulder and listening to a specific song in Tucson would, I think, be actually good in the hands of a different writer. I could see John Darnielle doing a really good job with specific references like that.

Whoops, accidentally hit enter before I was done with my last message. Anyways I was saying i'm actually not as worried at the prospect of Trump being president as I thought, mainly because i'm not so sure the electoral college will actually cast their ballots for him next month, they don't HAVE to vote for him if they don't want to, they could easily change their vote or not vote at all, and if enough electors opt not to vote for Trump that it brings his number of electoral votes down to less then 270, then things will get very interesting indeed.

I actually like "Don't Let Me Down" more then this song, mostly because the beat during the chorus in "Closer" is horrible, it sounds like a xylophone being dropped down a flight of stairs. Also I really don't think this song is a "millennial anthem" at all, there's plenty of songs from decades past about having broke down cars and being poor, that sort of thing is hardly unique to young people(plus as a young guy myself, i've always found the stereotype of young people being broke and miserable off-putting, I may not be rich but i'm far from destitute, and i'm not comfortable with people assuming that "millennials" can be grouped into one category, there's plenty of young rich people without a care in the world) plus the Nirvana(a band that i've always found immensely overrated and not very talented) and Biggie references shoot that theory down pretty soundly(if it was really a "millenial anthem" the artists being mentioned would be Imagine Dragons and Drake or something like that) I'm not too worried about president Trump, I thought I would feel sick if he won, but

LifeIsStrange

I'm always shocked to find out I'm technically a millennial. It just goes to show how much those old grouping don't work any more. People between the ages of 18 and 34 grew up in totally different worlds. I'm still broke though, don't get me wrong.

he only ends with covers for one hit wonderland

I'm a bit disappointed that the Postmodern Jukebox cover didn't play over the end credits. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jemgIOAjGDw

Well Todd, for what it's worth. I know people in the Philippines who still like this song, so you are not the only one.

Thomas Carmody

Name-checking Nirvana in a Millennial anthem? I'm on the older end of the Millennials, and my main memory of Nirvana is of my babysitter getting excited to watch Say What? Karaoke because she wanted to know the lyrics of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." If they are a little before my time, how would they be relevant to those who weren't even born yet?

Ryan Rowekamp

My attitude to this song would be similar to Todd's, if not for the overplay. I first heard it and thought "wow, this is pretty good for a crossover between the asshats who made Selfie and New Americana." But then I had to listen to it five times a day and my brain just had to reject it.

Brad Riegner

So, when I saw "Closer" in the title of the notification email, the NiN song was my first thought and then I got confused for a second, "NiN weren't a one-hit wonder, were they?" I always forget that this song is called "Closer," the Range Rover and the stolen-from-Boulder mattress are the phrases I remember. And I think that may be the secret genius of this song - sure the detail about the matress is kind of stupid, but it's memorable. How else do you stand out from the general noise of pop music, particularly EDM pop music?

Alina

While this song has emotion, I find this song so incredibly annoying, screechy, and the lyric writing is... baaaaad. I sadly enjoyed #Selfie much more. I was hoping you would do this song because on HD radio in Austin, we have ONE dance station and they play this one three times an hour it seems.

Sangie Nativus

Being cajoled into doing this song at karaoke has changed by view of it from "positively ambivalent" to "ambivalently positive", but in this shitshow of a year, that's good enough.

Jonathan P

I actually like this song too, possibly my favourite of the year in terms of pop stuff.

Jack Phillips

just listened to the downward spiral again you bastard. :)

Jack Phillips

O god the credits song. PLs

Jack Phillips

AUGH WHY DIDN'T YOU WARN US ABOUT THE SPIDERS

Imogen Geier

My sister and I really like Halsey's "Gasoline" and "Control". Like, REALLY. They're really dark, unsettling songs. Have you heard those?

Imogen Geier

Of the three that were top ten hits, none of them have much in common with Somebody That I Used to Know other than being duets about relationships. At least two, including this one, strike me as duets written for the sake of combining star power.

Teddy Haines

Huh? What do you mean

Todd in the Shadows

People had to guess the outro song? How is it not instantly recognisable? I'm really that old?

Mariangela Osiecki

I get "sorry" instead of a video :(

Anyone else correctly guess the outro song?

me

There have been a lot of duets about past relationships sang from two different perspectives this year. I call it the "Somebody-I-Used-to-Know"-Effect.
